Watch: An Installation Made From Crowdsourced Sunset Pics

Watch: An Installation Made From Crowdsourced Sunset Pics | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it

In the pantheon of digitally captured daily life, sunset snaps just might eclipse foamy lattes, pedicured feet on a beach, and duck-faced selfies as the most popular scene to capture and preserve.

Wherever you are in the world, there’s something almost magnetic about watching that massive, fiery orb descend and disappear over the horizon with the knowledge it will emerge again, still burning bright, on the other side of the earth tomorrow. Tobias Klein, of his eponymous London-based studio, set out to connect camera-happy denizens from across the globe with his crowdsourced installation Virtual Sunset, which recently finished its run at the Industry Gallery in Washington D.C...."

Incredible. Did Da Vinci Invent Google Glass? | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it

A researcher from the University of Illinois made an interesting discovery in Leonardo Da Vinci's sketches....

“The drawing is rudimentary, but the text and notation are unmistakable,” said Wilde in a phone interview.

The 29-year-old nuclear physicist has been poring over Da Vinci’s work for the better part of three years, searching not for Google Glass, but for some fresh ideas on cold fusion.

“It’s not that I think Da Vinci imagined nuclear power –- although, I guess he could have –- but he did have unique ways of thinking about everyday problems," he said. "I believe current research in the area has stagnated...”

siobhan-o-flynn's insight:

"...The experience through the site maintains a sense of perplexity, something Chris Spadaccini, SVP of Brand Marketing for HBO/Cinemax, says makes the campaign cohesive with the show's plot. "It's kind of like a big puzzle--the campaign feels like an extension of the series itself," he said. "Being a relatively new player in original programming, we needed a unique campaign. We're positioning hunted as an action packed edge of your seat thriller...."

Is An MFA The New MBA? Critical talent gap is creativity...

Is An MFA The New MBA? Critical talent gap is creativity... | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it
An estimated 10,000 Baby Boomers will turn 65 every day for at least the next 17 years, according to data from the Pew Research Center.

And while many of them might choose to work beyond the traditional retirement age of 65, leaders everywhere are facing the same daunting issue: A great tsunami of Baby Boomer retirement is coming...

Consider this: Today’s contingent economy has people moving constantly from one job to another, one type of work to another, one industry to a different industry. In fact, on average, a person between the ages of 25 and 45 will hold 11 different jobs in their lifetime. Thirty percent of us will work in more than 15 different jobs over the course of our careers.

Organizations far and wide--perhaps even yours--will compete intensely for workers who are adaptable, resourceful, and can quickly learn and apply new skills to a variety of challenges. Where can you find such workers?

One answer runs counter to much conventional wisdom: Ask an artist....

siobhan-o-flynn's insight:

"Companies all across America are starting to see a critical talent gap as older employees retire. Arts students may not have all the traditional skills, but they have the most important one: creativity."

What You Need to Know Before Watching Doctor Who: Guide for New Viewers!

What You Need to Know Before Watching Doctor Who: Guide for New Viewers! | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it

"If you've never watched Doctor Who, this Saturday's midseason premiere is a good time to start. Here's what you need to know before tuning in....

One of the smartest things about the BBC’s Doctor Who is that the long-running sci-fi show — which celebrates its 50th anniversary this November — has a built-in renewal mechanism that keeps the show fresh and leaves the story mostly unencumbered by what came before. When the title character experiences the sort of trauma that would kill lesser mortals, the Doctor ”regenerates” into a new actor, offering a new entry point for viewers, and removes the weight of continuity.

While the current incarnation of the Doctor is in the midst of his third season, this Saturday’s episode, “The Bells of Saint John,” is actually pretty close to a quiet reboot of the series, with a new companion joining the Doctor after the loss of his former time-traveling friends. That said, if you’re relatively unfamiliar with Doctor Who history, here’s what you might want to know before tuning in:

At the start of the episode, the Doctor — the last of a near-immortal alien race who travels through time and space in a living time machine called the TARDIS (Time and Relative Dimensions in Space) — is on his own, something that historically goes badly for him due to the resulting loneliness and the absence of a human perspective on his actions...."

The Hazards Of Tweeting While Watching TV

The Hazards Of Tweeting While Watching TV | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it

Twitter is hailed as a measure of TV engagement, but scientists say tweeters are paying less attention....

...Viewers who tweet and watch at the same time, in other words, have less attention to pay to either activity.

Dr. Jordan Grafman, Chief of the Cognitive Neuroscience Laboratory at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago, concured. "Even if you're doing two things at once, you're sort of doing one, then the other, then one, then the other, in a short time frame," he explained. "It's true we can do these things, we have the capability, but it costs us in deeper thinking...."

siobhan-o-flynn's insight:

Thisi is kinda funny - what deep thinking am I doing when watching TV? If I tweet, I will likely miss stuff, rewind and/or repeat view.. The dynamics are really interesting though in terms of wanting to stay synced between Twitter & TV. Falling seconds behind the Twitter present can be disaster as Tweets become spoilers rather than euphoric group confirmation of a shared experience

Mattia Nicoletti's curator insight, March 27, 2013 3:22 AM

Scientists are studying tweeting during traditional tv contents. I agree if they say we pay less attention when we tweet and watch but I believe it depends on what we are watching. Tweeting when we watch it is more an experience than just engagement.

Sometimes it’s a bit hard to describe what exactly a transmedia producer does. Transmedia storytellerJ.C. Hutchins (Byzantinum, Shadowrun Returns) recently summed it up this way: “Transmedia storytelling is seven-tenths outlining and project management, two-tenths content creation, and one-tenth batshit insanity.”

Whether transmedia producing can seem like cat herding, alchemy, binary poetry, and more all rolled into one, it is always an adventure. Come see three producers from the trenches tell it like it is for our April meetup: Transmedia Producing, a panel with Paul McGrath, Shelley Simmons and Victoria Evans on April 16th at Interaccess.

"How well does Twitter align with TV program ratings? The recent Nielsen/SocialGuide study confirmed that increases in Twitter volume correlate to increases in TV ratings for varying age groups, revealing a stronger correlation for younger audiences. Specifically, the study found that for 18-34 year olds, an 8.5% increase in Twitter volume corresponds to a 1% increase in TV ratings for premiere episodes, and a 4.2% increase in Twitter volume corresponds with a 1% increase in ratings for midseason episodes. Additionally, a 14.0% increase in Twitter volume is associated with a 1% increase in TV program ratings for 35-49 year olds, reflecting a stronger relationship between Twitter and TV for younger audiences...."

Creators Of "Zombieland" On What To Expect From The Upcoming Amazon Series | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it
Writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick explain why partnering with Amazon will mean more blood and guts.

Zombieland is coming back from the dead. After a failed pilot, a successful film, and a failed film sequel, Amazon announced this morning it has ordered a pilot for the anticipated series. That pilot, which was shot in Atlanta over 10 days in late February and early March, will premiere on Amazon Instant in mid-April.

"The show picks up two weeks after the movie — so they are leaving Los Angeles," the project's writer Paul Wernick explained in an interview today, along with his partner Rhett Reese. "We think of the movie as the pilot episode and, now that we're doing a series, we're hitting the road, on Amazon, in little half-hour movies..."
