So it came as confirmation of the cinema world's worst-kept secret that China finally passed Japan to become the largest market outside the US, worth $2.7bn (though Japan, another long-established, saturated territory, did post some small growth, too). I'm still sceptical, though, about Ernst & Young's widely quoted prediction that China will pass the US completely by 2020: that would mean extraordinary growth figures sustained over nearly a decade.

Excellent Post: Why Hollywood Needs More Experience Designers by No Mimes Media | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it

"Whether it’s a sync’d second screen, character twitter accounts, or phone numbers that show up on screen, these transmedia channels and all their narrative opportunities often seem to be squandered on delivering extraneous (boring) content at best, and marketing hooks at worst. If a viewer has taken the extra steps to find this transmedia content, give them something great. They’re in the palm of your hand…don’t lose them.

This is where an Experience Designer can help.

What if, instead of trivia or polls or “crummy commercials,” the current digital landscape was used to actually deliver story content? A character on the “main” screen sends a text message…you get that message on your phone. A website or blog is mentioned…you enter the URL and it actually exists. A phone number appears on onscreen caller ID, and you call it…a character actually answers and talks to you. A character makes a phone call…you see and hear the other end of the conversation in sync on your second screen...."

Charlotte Au's curator insight, March 26, 2014 8:17 AM

This diagram explains how PR has evolved through the adoption of social media. It shows that many old forms of marketing and media have become outdated and are been replaced by social media instead. This includes bloggers replacing reporters, twitter replacing news, YouTube replacing TVs and Pinterest replacing product shots. It also explains that social media allows authentic and credible information to be delivered speedily through social media networks which in turn assists businesses to form stronger relationships with their customers.

MIT's Tarleton Gillespie on The Relevance of Algorithms. TY Gary Hayes!

MIT's Tarleton Gillespie on The Relevance of Algorithms. TY Gary Hayes! | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it

I'm really excited to share my new essay, "The Relevance of Algorithms," with those of you who are interested in such things. It's been a treat to get to think through the issues surrounding algorithms and their place in public culture and knowledge, with some of the  participants in Culture Digitally (here’s the full litany: Braun, Gillespie, Striphas, Thomas, the third CD podcast, and Anderson‘s post just last week), as well as with panelists and attendees at the recent 4S and AoIRconferences, with colleagues at Microsoft Research, and with all of you who are gravitating towards these issues in their scholarship right now....

...What we need is an interrogation of algorithms as a key feature of our information ecosystem (Anderson 2011), and of the cultural forms emerging in their shadows (Striphas 2010), with a close attention to where and in what ways the introduction of algorithms into human knowledge practices may have political ramifications. This essay is a conceptual map to do just that. I will highlight six dimensions of public relevance algorithms that have political valence:

1. Patterns of inclusion: the choices behind what makes it into an index in the first place, what is excluded, and how data is made algorithm ready

2. Cycles of anticipation: the implications of algorithm providers’ attempts to thoroughly know and predict their users, and how the conclusions they draw can matter

3. The evaluation of relevance: the criteria by which algorithms determine what is relevant, how those criteria are obscured from us, and how they enact political choices about appropriate and legitimate knowledge

Great Post: The Future is Here and it is Grumpy: The Monetization of Memes by Caitlin Burns | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it
"Not everyone goes the “meme agent” route to success. Others, like Twitter Account @DeathStarPR  have been taking incremental steps toward larger platforms for growth.  Death Star PR started out as a Star Wars spoof twitter poking fun at the public relations industry. They took their following and translated it into a web series of the same name depicting the behind the scenes of the Empire’s spin team.

Selling subscriptions to the episodes, they were able to kickstart and create a webseries to expand their content, which is now available to watch for a $0.99 fee.

From humble beginnings, these are a few groups that have found audiences. Whether the models they are exploring are sustainable over time has yet to be seen, but it is certainly revelatory to examine how each group is surveying the landscape of opportunities that their Internet-fame has opened up....."

Scary. The ATF Wants 'Massive' Online Database to Find Out Who Your Friends Are | Danger Room | Wired.com | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it

Law enforcement investigations can be pretty tedious. Hence why the ATF is seeking an automated database to quickly identify you and who you know....

The bureau wants this new system to do all that gathering and research automatically. Which sounds like a good deal, in theory, allowing federal investigators to more easily bust criminals during a hot case. It could potentially give the investigators a lot more information than your sense of privacy may be comfortable with, or information not strictly relevant to a case. At the same time, the ATF is widely perceived as a weak, stagnant and underfunded agency. Even if it has a database that can track you down and find out who your friends are, it won’t necessarily be able to apply that to tracing gun transactions due to Congressional restrictions. If the agency finds a gun linked to a crime, and then traces the gun to someone who bought it from someone else, all of that work figuring out the who’s-who will still likely have to be done manually..."

MIT Open Documentary Lab:What are the most useful skills for an interactive storyteller? What are the tools of the trade?

Harris: Empathy, character, story. I believe that an “interactive storyteller” should focus on the same skills utilized by every other storyteller. Technologies come and go. But I don’t think they fundamentally change human behavior. Mark Twain said: “A lie can travel halfway around the world while the truth is putting on its shoes.” The only difference is that now, a lie can make it around the world about a million times before the truth gets its shoes on. I am really trying to focus on human behavior and psychology. Then I use whatever tech is right for a particular job. For me, tech is largely about scaling a project up. If you cannot make a project compelling in one room with 10 people, tech won’t help you. One of the reasons I love doing live interactive events is that they are a good way to “paper test” ideas, before going down a tech development hole for six months. So really I think the main skills should be storytelling skills...."
