Why Content Marketing is a Long Game (and How to Play It)

Why Content Marketing is a Long Game (and How to Play It) | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it

"The Copyblogger Media team returned from Austin last week, where (almost) all of us gathered for a company-wide meeting amidst the madness of SXSWi. We flew in for three days — from all corners of the US and Canada — to talk company values, where we’ve been, and where we’re going.

Our company works entirely remotely, so before this meeting, I hadn’t met most of my co-workers. During the course of those three days, I built relationships with our support team, I played poker (badly) with our developers, and I bonded with my editorial staff over eighties music and movies.

Our management team thinks long term. They know that the long-game value of getting all of us together to bond, plan, laugh, and dream far exceeds the cost of plane tickets, hotel rooms, catered meals, and private viewings of the late, great Patrick Swayze’s Road House (ask Tony Clark)....

www.wired.co.uk is a credible website for a magazine, so the information gained from this article can be considered accurate. There also seams to be little to no bias presented by wired magazine. I find it interesting that the allocation of €100 million worth of funding into France's robotics industry has been made to make up for the lack of competitivness France has played in the robotics industry so far and that there desire to keep up shows that they believe the future is indeed heading in the direction of robotics.

Intersting template to look at when presenting changing communication channels

Charlotte Au's curator insight, March 26, 2014 8:17 AM

This diagram explains how PR has evolved through the adoption of social media. It shows that many old forms of marketing and media have become outdated and are been replaced by social media instead. This includes bloggers replacing reporters, twitter replacing news, YouTube replacing TVs and Pinterest replacing product shots. It also explains that social media allows authentic and credible information to be delivered speedily through social media networks which in turn assists businesses to form stronger relationships with their customers.

Google Glass: Device threatens privacy, says Stop the Cyborgs movement | Financial Post

Google Glass: Device threatens privacy, says Stop the Cyborgs movement | Financial Post | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it

"A group called Stop the Cyborgs launched recently with the motto "Fighting the algorithmic future one bit at a time" to drum up debate about Glass, Google's much-hyped Internet-powered glasses...

Not everyone is falling into fits of paranoia over Google Glass, though. Some observers argue it could actually be a force for good.

Take TechCrunch’s Jon Evans’s point: “To a limited extent I actually want Google Glass surveillance, in an uneasy Pandora’s-box kind of way. I want police officers, border guards, and other authorities to be required to wear them every moment that they’re on duty, and I want that data to be available to those who report police brutality or other abuses of authority . . . I want street protestors to be videoing the authorities at all times. I do not trust the powers that be.”...

siobhan-o-flynn's insight:

The underlying assumption of the 'evolution' of technology - this tech naturally leads to that is striking in terms of how Google Glass is framed. As if it is now natural to want to do record & stream video from a headset.

Kexin Jin's curator insight, March 21, 2013 9:09 AM

I agree with "Google Glasses represent a developmental leap in the history of data that is comparable to moving from the bicycle to the automobile." Google Glasses could be privacy threat but so does camera, PC, mobile phone. A project dont have "good" or "bad", it depends on the person who use it.

I agree with Kevin that narrative is different with stores. Narrative is more affective way for company to understand the process of what they did wrong or right. In the other side, stories are just to tell and it is not really interactive to the company.
An, SungBin's comment, May 9, 2013 10:43 PM
I agree with the article, any company can have their own stories. However, it is hard to get attention by the customers in these days. and I think the narrative has more powerful influences then a just stories. of course, it depends how you narrate the stories to customers, it might get worse.
Karen Dietz's comment, May 10, 2013 11:31 AM
All of these comments are very interesting and I think some additional points need to be made. First, not all narratives re stories. A report or an essay or a testimonial are all types of narratives and are definitely not stories. A report can have stories within it, but is still a type of narrative. If people understood the DYNAMICS of storytelling they would know that stories continually evolve and are all about engagement. Storytelling is NOT about telling, it's about the co-created experience that happens when people are experiencing the telling and listening at the same time. Stories by their nature are interactive. Can narrative evolve? Sure. But the points made at the conference is setting up a false dichotomy between narratives and stories, which when put into practice, is less relevant. The most important piece to pay attention to is the engagement and evolving nature of stories. Saying stories end and narratives don't is silly and not true.

10 Reasons Why We Struggle With Creativity - Forbes [very very interesting - need more time!] | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it

"2. Chunks of time are hard to come by.

Even when we can outwit our brain’s threat-alert system, it’s still difficult to find what the late, great management philosopher Peter Drucker advised we must find to be effective in any capacity: “chunks of time.”  Spurts of time riddled with interruptions aren’t conducive to creativity because each time our focus is wrecked, we struggle to get back to the point we’d reached in our creative “flow” (a term coined by psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi).  Creativity isn’t like restarting a blu ray disk and picking up exactly where we left off. A great deal of energy went into getting to the place, and we must expend more energy to get into it again..."

Grazie @ChristyDena for Find! You Are Not Tarantino or Kevin Smith - Script Magazine | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it

"People who want to submit spec scripts should know how to play by the rules and recognize they are not Quentin Tarantino or Kevin Smith...

...there are always two different kinds of screenwriters.

The first kind are artisan-screenwriters. These are the kind of writers whose skills lie in finding interesting ways to interrupt conventional wisdom, as it exists in the industry, at that point in cinema history. In 1940’s Italy, that meant studio epics with lots of togas and horses. In present day Hollywood, it means ticking all the boxes a script reader needs to tick. BSR’s articles are written to elucidate and educate artisan-screenwriters, as are most of the books written to teach you how it’s done. Script readers and script gurus all live and die by the rigid application of rule one.

The second kind of screenwriters are the artist-mavericks. These are the screenwriters who don’t give a flying-monkey’s nut about character arcs or plot points, they come to the party with a specific vision of what a film could be like if you just did X. X in this case being the interesting thing the writer has in their head. X also being the one thing that no script reader would ever pass up the line, the idea that no industry insider would ever finance...."

Nick DeMartino on: Digital Media from the Inside Out - Karine Halpern & the Transmedia Alliance @ SXSW

Nick DeMartino on: Digital Media from the Inside Out - Karine Halpern & the Transmedia Alliance @ SXSW | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it

"SXSW 2013 featured at least a dozen transmedia sessions – more, depending upon the degree of elasticity you confer upon that very elastic term.

Among them, the first officially sanctioned meet-up of transmedia meet-ups from around the world, organized by Paris-based Karine Halpern, including folks from groups in New York, Paris, London, San Francisco, and Los Angeles, as well as producers, tools-makers, broadcasters, academics, and technologists interested in the transmedia movement -- altogether about 50 attendees.

The session’s call to action announced the intention to form a Transmedia Alliance in order to formalize ties between transmedia groups under the umbrella of an international non-profit. Its goals would include: sustaining the global transmedia community, promoting best practices, helping newcomers enter the field, and sharing knowledge.

The idea of an alliance was stimulated by the upsurge of activity by local transmedia meetups since the first StoryWorld Conference in San Francisco in October 2011, when a similar meetup of meetups was held. Informal ties between groups have continued, including groups on Facebook and Linked In. For many activists like Halpern, something more structured is required. Her model is Transmedia Europe, which launched last January...."

Creativity and design are inspired by all sorts of things.  In this case, a movie was used but games offer some great settings to explore. Students could take a structure from their favourite game and develop a prototype or they could debate if the structure would be suitable for the real world, what difficulties there might be in designing and building the structure or what sorts of needs/wants does the structure fulfil.

All of the participants' drug regimes had been interrupted for one reason or another. For example, some people had made a personal choice to stop taking the drugs, others had been part of a trial of different drug protocols.

Most of the 70 people relapsed when their treatment was interrupted, with the virus rebounding rapidly to pre-treatment levels. But 14 of them – four women and 10 men – were able to stay off of ARVs without relapsing, having taken the drugs for an average of three years.
