Robin Williams’ secret life as a video gamer: The online gaming community mourns one of its own

Robin Williams’ secret life as a video gamer: The online gaming community mourns one of its own | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it
Like them, Williams was a video game obsessive for whom fantasy was a welcome retreat from the world VIDEO
siobhan-o-flynn's insight:

Amazing.

'... players might just stumble across Williams in a game after all. The idea to memorialize Robin Williams as a “World of Warcraft” Non-Player Character was born in a “World of Warcraft” forum on Monday night, and within hours, a Change.org petition had been created to do just that. The petition contextualizes Williams firmly within the gaming community, not as a celebrity, but as one of them: “It was reported that Robin used to play on the Mannoroth server, and was something of a troll in trade on good days or when anonymity allowed. … Because of his presence within our community, we the players of ‘World of Warcraft’ are asking Blizzard to kindly create an NPC within the game that memorializes the actor/comedian. Many have expressed a wish [that] this character perform some of Williams’ best jokes within the World’s End Tavern, so that he may continue making us smile long after his passing.”

The petition ballooned to almost 9,000 signatures by this morning, and rumors are swirling that the “WoW” powers-that-be have already approved the request. “Celestalon has seen the petition and has been quoted as saying ‘We’re taking care of it,’” wrote the petition organizer...'

Cinema and second screen applications: focus on the film App and the Disney Second Screen experience

Cinema and second screen applications: focus on the film App and the Disney Second Screen experience | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it

'Offering parallel narrations, scene enrichment and new leisure experiences, the film App and Disney Second Screen are revolutIonising the cinema experience.

In recent years, cinema attendance has been decreasing in mature markets, particularly within the European Union, where attendance fell 4.1% in 2013. In order to combat these falling numbers and to bring young audiences back to cinemas, industry stakeholders are developing with highly creative solutions. One of these approaches, known as second screen applications, has become a popular way of enriching the cinema experience.

Since the film App was released in the Netherlands in 2013 as the first second screen experience in cinema, other stakeholders such as Disney have jumped on the bandwagon...'

Kent Sheely specializes in brilliant video game subversions.

This is Minecraft re-imagined by Kent Sheely, a new-media artist living in New York. Sheely specializes in videogame subversions like these, adding to, subtracting from, and remixing familiar interactive titles to help us consider them in new ways.

Sheely discovered videogames at a young age and realized he could bend them to his will shortly thereafter. He was 6 when he started learning the programming language Basic, and he grew up with one foot on each side of the medium—avidly playing games and making them. It wasn’t until college that he encountered people using videogames for art: “You know, really re-interpreting the existing work to communicate something about the medium and about its culture,” he says. It spurred him to explore games as a means of expression....'

The biggest game companies are thinking bigger when it comes to transmedia entertainment.

...In the span of a couple of weeks, I heard a couple of very interesting talks on transmedia, or entertainment properties that span multiple media like games, movies, and comic books. One talk took place at the Casual Connect conference in San Francisco, where game developer Nick Fortugno observed that the creation of a new entertainment property is best pursued in the development of a mobile game. That’s because mobile games can be made inexpensively and quickly, compared to movies or console games. You can test out new ideas more easily, with less risk. If you take a risk with a movie, you’ll go broke....'
