Kent Sheely specializes in brilliant video game subversions.

This is Minecraft re-imagined by Kent Sheely, a new-media artist living in New York. Sheely specializes in videogame subversions like these, adding to, subtracting from, and remixing familiar interactive titles to help us consider them in new ways.

Sheely discovered videogames at a young age and realized he could bend them to his will shortly thereafter. He was 6 when he started learning the programming language Basic, and he grew up with one foot on each side of the medium—avidly playing games and making them. It wasn’t until college that he encountered people using videogames for art: “You know, really re-interpreting the existing work to communicate something about the medium and about its culture,” he says. It spurred him to explore games as a means of expression....'

The biggest game companies are thinking bigger when it comes to transmedia entertainment.

...In the span of a couple of weeks, I heard a couple of very interesting talks on transmedia, or entertainment properties that span multiple media like games, movies, and comic books. One talk took place at the Casual Connect conference in San Francisco, where game developer Nick Fortugno observed that the creation of a new entertainment property is best pursued in the development of a mobile game. That’s because mobile games can be made inexpensively and quickly, compared to movies or console games. You can test out new ideas more easily, with less risk. If you take a risk with a movie, you’ll go broke....'

Video Games Are Good For You | VICE United States | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it

'Video games aren't some obscure niche property anymore. Still, gamers let the non-gamers in a group make them feel like the weirdos and outcasts in a social setting. Enough of that.

There are over 180 million active gamers in the US. The gender divide has become next to non-existent, with the male/female split sitting at about 52 percent to 48 percent, based on stateside figures. Total global revenue in the video game industry is predicted to break the $100 billion mark by the end of 2014. The release of one game alone, 2013’s Grand Theft Auto V, generated $800 million in worldwide sales in just 24 hours—more than any other piece of entertainment, ever.…'

Here's a new way to support your expensive VR habit: hunt for flaws in the code for the Oculus Rift virtual reality headset, software development kit (SDK), and website.
