Sherlock Holmes & the Internet of Things is a prototype of the Columbia Digital Storytelling Lab that experiments with shifts in authorship and ownership of stories while exploring the ethical and political implications of IoT (Internet of Things).

The Internet of Things is positioned to be the largest deployment of connected devices, dwarfing PCs, tablets and smartphones combined. The opportunity this presents for laying storytelling over the physical world is exciting. Stories that can aid the discovery, personalization and connection of people to places and things. With any new emergent form of storytelling comes the need for a grammar. So what will a 21st Century re-write look like?

Dr. Pamela Rutledge's curator insight, August 15, 11:00 AM

Effective VR means constructing a "new" environmental experience independent of "reality." (Truly we need better words to differentiate these things). AR overlays reality and reality isn't controllable so it will continually be a noncooperative participant in the creation of presence and immersive experience. Successful AR installations needs a shift in conceptualization of what it can do and the purpose of juxtaposing information over reality. Is it integrative or does it provide a portal for experience? Is immersion really the goal? #mediapsych

Richard Platt's curator insight, August 15, 3:22 PM

Oculus CEO Brendan Iribe, who outlined the reasons for keeping the realities divergent. In short? Augmented reality isn't advanced enough yet to match what Oculus can do with immersive VR, and they don't expect it to be for a long time yet.  "It is a different market because it's a different user experience," Iribe says. "You see the real world and [rendered models will] appear holographic for a long time, because matching the lighting of the real world through the glasses is incredibly difficult. You have an incredible perceptual system that can detect when things aren't quite right."   While that's a problem Microsoft may have to address with its own upcoming AR project, Hololens, Iribe thinks the industry may see a half-way point hybridising VR and AR.

Vivalist's curator insight, August 16, 5:26 AM

He says. "It won't show you video [via external cameras] because that won't be comfortable, but it'll scan in local space."

It seems to me like some techs already starts to emerge allowing just that (http://www.ximmerse.com/#!stero-camera/c1k4c) but I guess he knows wht is talking about right :)

Interactive Filmmaking Round Up Report

Interactive Filmmaking Round Up Report | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it

"Over the course of a year, Sheffield Doc/Fest collaborated with Crossover Labs and film festivals around the country to run a series of workshops on interactivity and filmmaking. All six interactive platforms: Klynt, Racontr, Korsakow, Popcorn Maker, Treehouse and Storygami, give filmmakers the ability to create interactive elements for their films, without the need for a programmer to build them.

(...) My role was to attend every workshop, try out the platforms, and write a report that would explain what each of them offers to filmmakers who wish to add interactivity to their films."

The key to awesome future robots could be seahorse tails | Eric Mack | GizMag.com

The key to awesome future robots could be seahorse tails | Eric Mack | GizMag.com | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it

The key to better, tougher and more coordinated robots as well as improved surgical procedures, among other advances, could derive their inspiration from an unlikely source – the odd, square tail of the all-around strange seahorse.

While most animal tails are cylindrical in cross-section, the seahorse has a unique, squared tail that not only provides the fish with a tough armor, but also gives it a strong grasp to hold on to things like plants or coral and "fish" for food that floats by its mouth. A paper in the most recent issue of the journal Science lays out some of the virtues of the appendage, which provides potential insight into engineering and robotics applications given its combination of strength and flexibility.

The team has been working on the research for a few years now, and we first took notice of the effort back in 2013.

"We found that this square architecture provides adequate dexterity and a tough resistance to predators, but also that it tends to snap naturally back into place once it’s been twisted and deformed," said co-author Ross Hatton, an assistant engineering professor at Oregon State University. "This could be very useful for robotics applications that need to be strong, but also energy-efficient and able to bend and twist in tight spaces."

...Then Fleming found Inanimate Alice.

Created by the British novelist Kate Pullinger and British-Canadian multimedia artist Chris Joseph, Alice is a book that blinks, buzzes, hums, sings, jitterbugs, plays games, and, on occasion, rains and snows. Using her laptop, Fleming projected the first Alice story onto a library whiteboard … and her fifth-graders went nuts. The story was immersive like little else, the first piece of fiction that helped them see life through a character’s eyes. A few students approached her afterwards to thank her, tears glistening in their eyes....

“A brand is a story that is always being told.”

Dr. Pamela Rutledge's curator insight, August 15, 11:12 AM

Nice example of how visual "packaging" makes something you probably already know fun and interesting. Good thing, too. Storytelling is a critical skill because it is how the brain understands and stores information. And maybe each variation of presentation using image or language lets you hear it a little differently each time. Lurking psychological principles: repetition increases learning; frequency increases liking and personal relevance or salience; image engages instinctive, faster and more emotional processing than text alone.
