A Brief Visual History of On-Screen Text Messages in Movies and TV | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it

'In college, one of my professors made an casual observation that struck an eerie chord, and has stayed close to mind since. "In a way, we've all become cyborgs," she said, matter-of-factly. "How often is your phone not within a couple inches of your hand?” Of course, our technological dependence isn’t news anymore. And with the onslaught of wearable tech and Google Glass finally being made available to purchase (for a cool $1,500), we’re becoming more cyborg-ish than ever...'

Video games are often used as a learning tool, but most educational games focus on word memorization or the magic of math. However, many game theorists and economists are beginning to realize that video games have something more significant to teach us about the function of our societies, governments, and economies. In 2001, economist Edward Castranova wrote a groundbreaking paper about the economy of EverQuest. In his paper, Castranova revealed that EverQuest’s currency was more valuable than the Japanese Yen, and that the game’s gross national product was actually bigger than that of China or India. Castranova is now a telecommunications professor at Indiana University Bloomington and is currently working on a book about evolutionary game theory and how virtual economies are drastically influencing our own....'

JAWS Entrepreneur Fellow reveals transmedia storytelling project - JAWS

JAWS Entrepreneur Fellow reveals transmedia storytelling project - JAWS | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it
JAWS members attending the Conference and Mentoring Project (CAMP) will be able to talk with JAWS' first entrepreneurial fellow Melissa Ludtke about transmedia story-making and the story she is telling — “Touching Home in China: In Search of Missing Girlhoods.”

In her early 60s, she took on a new challenge: she decided to learn how to use an emerging digital platform to tell a compelling story she’d been a part of in rural China. She is producing an iBook that lets her mesh video (shot by a bilingual crew she hired in China), galleries of photos, interactive graphics, pop-out text boxes and narrative text across a single platform. When the iBook is launched in September 2015, its transmedia story will be digitally distributed to global audiences through her project’s social media ecosystem.

Ludtke's iBook videos show encounters of American and Chinese teens that occurred when her 16-year-old daughter Maya, adopted from China as a baby, and her orphanage crib neighbor Jennie, each of whom was abandoned as a newborn in a farming village near Changzhou, China, returned to the towns where they were abandoned as newborns. There, they got to know girls their age who were raised there and those girls became their guides to gaining a sense of what their missing girlhoods might have been.

PBS And Pemberley Digital’s ‘Frankenstein, MD’ Comes Alive

PBS And Pemberley Digital’s ‘Frankenstein, MD’ Comes Alive | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it

'PBS Digital Studios, in partnership with Pemberley Digital, just released its first-ever series based on a story that’s nearly 200 years old. Frankenstein, MD, a modern, online video adaptation of Mary Shelley’s classic novel came alive on August 19, 2014.

Created by the same team who gave us The Lizzie Bennet Diaries and Emma Approved (which includes Hank Green of Vlogbrothers fame and Bernie Su), the transmedia web series introduces viewers to Victoria Frankenstein, a highly-driven woman dedicated to proving herself in the male-dominated fields of math and science. And much like in Frankenstein MD’s spiritual predecessors, fans will be able to follow Victoria’s experiments in the lab not just through video, but on her blog, Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr, and Instagram....'

'Frankenstein, MD,' Bringing Gothic Horror to the Internet

'Frankenstein, MD,' Bringing Gothic Horror to the Internet | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it

'Frankenstein, MD is perhaps the most torn I have ever been over a review. On one hand, it features corny sitcom writing, over-the-top acting and the same physical comedy often seen in children’s programs. On the other, it’s a show deeply rooted in the famous Mary Shelley novel with details and modernized nuances that the literature nerd in me has way too much fun noticing. Hmm, to hate or not to hate? That is the question.

The show —the latest transmedia series from Pemberley Digital and PBS Digital Studios— is kind of like the love child of Bill Nye the Science Guy and The Lizzie Bennet Diaries. Like the Lizzie Bennett Dairies, which is an Emmy award-winning web series based on Jane Austen’s Pride and PrejudiceFrankenstein MD is based on Ms. Shelley’s Frankenstein. The show includes the novel’s famous characters and motif’s with a few major differences....'

Super Cool Tech. Hands-On With Bublcam’s Spherical Video Camera | TechCrunch | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it

The Bublcam is a video camera that can capture a sphere of content with its four high-def sensors. We first covered it when its creators put up a Kickstarter campaign looking to raise $100,000 to bring the gadget to market. After raising more than three times that, the team behind it has spent nine months tweaking the camera to prepare it for launch this fall.

We had Bublcam CEO Sean Ramsay stop by the office to show off the current version of the device, which is available for preorder for $579. In our demo, we used the Bublcam to stream a live video, take a selfie, and record footage from around the office. Operating the camera with one button is easy once you know how long you need to press it for each function, and the color-changing LEDs let you know what the camera is doing at all times....

Video Games Are Good For You | VICE United States | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it

'Video games aren't some obscure niche property anymore. Still, gamers let the non-gamers in a group make them feel like the weirdos and outcasts in a social setting. Enough of that.

There are over 180 million active gamers in the US. The gender divide has become next to non-existent, with the male/female split sitting at about 52 percent to 48 percent, based on stateside figures. Total global revenue in the video game industry is predicted to break the $100 billion mark by the end of 2014. The release of one game alone, 2013’s Grand Theft Auto V, generated $800 million in worldwide sales in just 24 hours—more than any other piece of entertainment, ever.…'
