Whisper, Secret, and Snapchat leaks show that fake privacy is almost worse than no privacy at all

Whisper, Secret, and Snapchat leaks show that fake privacy is almost worse than no privacy at all | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it
Last week in an investigative story the Guardian revealed that anonymous social feed Whisper is actually collecting user locations based on geolocation and IP addresses.

The report also says that Whisper is saving posts and their location information to a searchable database, despite its promise to be “the safest place on the Internet.” But the revelation about Whisper is just the latest in a string of incidents that remind users that many, if not all, of the consumer apps on the market that promise anonymity and security fail to deliver.

Secret has shown it’s vulnerable to hacking, though the company does have a bug bounty program that has successfully kept Secret out of the news, as Wired reported. But the same can’t be said for Snapchat, which repeatedly finds its way into the news, most recently for a leak of 200,000 user photos that ended up on Internet forum 4chan. Though Snapchat’s servers weren’t hacked in this particular event, the ephemeral messaging service has been found to be less secure — and less ephemeral — than it advertises. The company settled charges with the Federal Trade Commission in May for overstated claims of user anonymity and security.

Secrets to Making Good Interactive Films by FoST Prize-Winners Daniels

Secrets to Making Good Interactive Films by FoST Prize-Winners Daniels | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it
Many filmmakers testing out the waters of interactive film understand the inherent murkiness of the medium: the challenge in giving your audience agency while maintaining enough control over the narrative to let it take shape. Never one to shy away from challenges and new approaches to filmmaking are the acclaimed directing duo Daniels, who proved how beautifully interactive films can be executed with their FoST Prize–winning project, Possibilia, which was awarded for being the best interactive story project of the past year by a panel of acclaimed judges including Robert Wong of Google Creative Lab and Damian Kulash, lead singer of OK Go.

Mainly known for their boundary-pushing music videos like Best Director VMA–winning “Turn Down For What”  and Battles’ “My Machines,” Daniels took a step into the future with Possibilia, their groundbreaking “choose-your-own-adventure”-style nonlinear narrative experience that asks audiences to decide on a star-crossed couple’s fate—while watching the film. Produced by digital media company Interlude in collaboration with Prettybird and featuring Girls star Alex Karpovsky acting alongside Zoe Jarman from The Mindy Project, Possibilia allows viewers to switch between thirty different scenarios, all while the couple’s consistent dialogue links the narrative together on screen.

My Favorite Things: Bryan Talbot, Graphic Novel Man

My Favorite Things: Bryan Talbot, Graphic Novel Man | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it
Early on, Dez Skinn characterizes Talbot as the “David Bowie of comics,” describing his shape-shifting capacity: Talbot adjusts his style to the demands of different kinds of stories and has worked across the full spectrum of British comics — from early work in the underground comics through commercial work on The Sandman or Batman through to his more mature works, the Luther Arkwright saga, A Tale of One Bad Rat, Alice in Sunderland, the Grandville series, and A Dotter in Her Father’s Eyes. Taking Talbot’s virtuosity as a starting point, The Graphic Novel Man surveys his work, offering expert commentary from his contemporaries, and from time to time, giving us a chance to really focus on the complex choices he makes in the construction of any given page.

The Internet Archive releases tools to let anyone store community content forever | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it
The Internet Archive, the nonprofit repository for content on the Internet, announced today a strategic shift, putting it in the position of storage-dump provider that “communities” can tap if and when they see fit.

“We are creating new tools to help every media-based community build their own collections on a long-term platform that is available to the entire world for free,” the nonprofit’s founder, Brewster Kahle, wrote in a blog post today. “Collectors will be able to upload media, reference media from other collections, use tools to coordinate the activities of their community, and create a distinct Internet presence while also offering users the chance to explore diverse collections of other content.”

This is no (r)evolution

"Each day there are more of us interactive storytellers. Because we enjoy the freedom of creating with fewer boundaries, because we could not take another “lean-back” century or because it is just that thing to explore right now. But it would be a great loss to engage in the craft of telling interactive stories without knowing where we come from. So there is, a bit of background "

How copyright law gives Amazon too much power over the book industry

How copyright law gives Amazon too much power over the book industry | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it
And while the law was passed at the behest of content creators, it also gave a lot of power to platform owners. If you buy a movie on iTunes, you're effectively forced to continue buying Apple devices if you want to keep watching the movie. Tools to transfer copy-protected movies you've purchased from iTunes onto another platform exist, but they're illegal and, accordingly, not very user-friendly.

Amazon has taken advantage of the DMCA too. Kindle books come copy-protected so that only Amazon-approved software can read it without breaking the law. Of course, software to convert it to other formats exists, but it's illegal and accordingly isn't very convenient or user-friendly.

BBC - Blogs - Internet blog - How we built "The Doctor and the Dalek" CBBC game | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it
“The Doctor and the Dalek” CBBC game forms part of the BBC’s ‘Make It Digital’ initiative.

And it's exactly the kind of hybrid we love at Somethin’ Else. It’s a ‘game with purpose’ — intrinsically fantastic to play, yet achieving something concrete and measurable. Playing the game delivers not just endorphins but specific parts of the UK’s school curriculum (‘Key Stage 2 and 3 programming’).

From the off, my team designed a game loop we were certain would do the job: skedaddle over Skaro (say) until you are blocked by something that can only be passed by upgrading your Dalek; the upgrading process would require completion of a ‘coding challenge.’

Easy words — and still not enough to describe a game someone can build.

In 1936, Esquire Magazine published American author F. Scott Fitzgerald’s essay The Crack-Up – a loose-form story of a man losing his grip on reality.

Led by director and choreographer Kim Vincs and a team of designers and animators at the Deakin Motion.Lab, The Crack Up interprets Fitzgerald’s story and brings the themes to the forefront of digital technology and performance. Live dancers and virtual performers are set against a massive shifting and crumbling world of 3D-projected stereoscopic landscapes and interactive visualisation systems.

Audience members will wear 3D glasses to see the imagery come to life in stunning high resolution, as it envelops performers in an environment inspired by, but entirely foreign to, Fitzgerald’s imagination
