User-Generated Storytelling | Open Documentary Lab at MIT | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it

User-generated content. Some say it’s the future, others a fad. At the very least, it’s a buzz word. But underneath the buzz, what’s actually going on?

New technologies have made it easier for people to create media. Today’s audiences document almost on instinct, sharing their images on platforms like Instagram, Facebook, and Flickr. Content makers are experimenting with ways of incorporating viewer submissions into existing properties. It’s now routine to see viewer-generated footage in “breaking news” segments, and major companies, such as Apple and Google, have created advertising campaigns celebrating their customers’ content creation....

We've all heard about "in the light" sharing on social platforms, but dark social—when people copy and paste content or links and send it to their contacts in a private message—matters just as much, if not more. Over 90% of internet users who share content online do so via dark social, which accounts for nearly 70% of content shares globally.

Save the Sci-Fi campaign bids to convert rare novels to ebooks

Save the Sci-Fi campaign bids to convert rare novels to ebooks | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it
A New York bookshop has launched a campaign to rescue old SF novels. The campaign by Singularity&Co, a new specialist SF bookshop in Brooklyn, comes at the perfect time. Secondhand bookshops – where most fans acquire and develop their habit – are under serious threat, and with them the back catalogue of weird and speculative fiction that they have preserved for so long.

The Save the Sci-Fi campaign aims to bring back in to print one cult SF novel each month and provide it online for free. And if anyone needed proof this is a popular idea, over $52,000 raised through crowdfunding goes some way to providing it

Ebooks can tell which novels you didn't finish | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it
Earlier this year, the American mathematician Jordan Ellenberg proposed the so-called “Hawking Index” in a blog for the Wall Street Journal, using Amazon’s “Popular Highlights” feature in an attempt to pinpoint how far into novels readers were actually getting, but retailers have been reluctant to share the data they are harvesting themselves. Kobo’s first analysis of trends in e-reading, released on Wednesday, reveal an unexpected divide between bestsellers, and the books that readers actually complete.

GifGonzo Wants to Print Your Favorite GIFs IRL | Beckett Mufson | The Creators Project

GifGonzo Wants to Print Your Favorite GIFs IRL | Beckett Mufson | The Creators Project | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it

Not long after GIFs achieved total internet domination, they began trying to escape, manifesting themselves physically through projects like Electric Objects, a framed screen that puts web art on your wall, and Joe Winograd's holographic prints which use lenticular technology—a lá those holographic cards that change when you tilt them—to behave like live GIFs. Much like Winograd's prints, a new outfit called GifGonzo has begun to offer well-known GIF artists' works in the form of lenticular prints. According to their IndieGogo campaign, the goal is "to incubate and elevate [the] GIF as a legitimate artform."

GifGonzo is working directly with GIF artists including Sholim, Caitlin Burns, and Spyrogif, whom we wrote about earlier this month, to adapt GIFs for the lenticular format. Profits will be split with the artists 50/50, according to the IndieGogo page, and the first round of profit on GifGonzo's side will go towards recruiting new artists. The end goal involves hosting physical GIF art exhibitions in traditional brick and mortar galleries.

High-quality lenticular GIFs will run for about $250 plus shipping, but the early bird special on their IndieGogo will get you one for about $125 alongside a frame and a non-reflective glass cover to protect your gorgeous new GIF. If the project gets funded, shipments will be set for January 2015. Check out GifGonzo's IndieGogo video below:

Hey, Parents. What Minecraft Is Doing to Your Kids Is Kind of Surprising. | 2Machines.com | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it

The point of Minecraft seems simple: build practically anything you can imagine. Some kids recreate famous pieces of architecture, others express their creativity through grand designs.

Since 2009, Minecraft has sold over 20 million copies. And if that seems like a typical blockbuster, don’t be fooled — it isn’t. Graphics are boxy and blurry, and sounds are primitive at best.

So why do kids obsess over it?

I gather a handful of 5-to-13-year-olds. I want to know why they love about it and what they get out of it. I expect simple answers. But, I find out, Minecraft is surprisingly special.

Apple Gets Two-Week Exclusive to 'Trip to Italy' as iTunes Becomes More Valuable to Indie Filmmakers

Apple Gets Two-Week Exclusive to 'Trip to Italy' as iTunes Becomes More Valuable to Indie Filmmakers | Tracking Transmedia | Scoop.it
After establishing itself as a lucrative platform for independent filmmakers, Apple’s iTunes is starting to get more access to their movies. The company started offering IFC Films’ “The Trip to Italy” earlier this week exclusively for two weeks before the Steve Coogan comedy is released on other digital platforms.

Should the film sell well, iTunes is likely to start getting even more exclusives from other independent distributors — which should prove especially beneficial to Apple as it faces increased competition from Amazon, Netflix, Walmart’s Vudu and VOD platforms run by cable and satellite operators. All are looking to tout exclusive titles to their customers as a way to attract more consumers and boost revenue.

The ebook will overtake the paperback and hardback as Britons' preferred format for reading their favourite novels by 2018, according to a report. The UK consumer ebook market – which excludes professional and educational books – is forecast to almost triple from £380m to £1bn over the next four years.

Over the same period, accounting group PwC predicts that sales of printed editions will fall by more than a third to £912m as the UK population's reading habits become dominated by tablets, with 50% of the country expected to own an iPad, Kindle or a similar device by 2018.
