Robert Pratten presents case studies of recent transmedia projects and his workflow for adding participation to any linear format such as a web series, book or movie. Robert is CEO and Founder of Transmedia Storyteller Ltd., an audience engagement company and provider of Conducttr, a pervasive entertainment platform, developed by his company for cross-platform social games and stories. The Conducttr authoring tool requires no programming skills and is available worldwide via any web browser. Experiences scripted in Conducttr can be immediately made available on a free Conducttr mobile app or via bespoke custom-apps.

 

SPECIAL EVENT LOCATION: Rm 179, University College @ 15 Kings College Circle, Toronto. Co-hosted by The Canadian Studies Program, University College, University of Toronto.

Web apps vs. native apps

 

There are two basic terms you need to know before I can answer this question:

 

• Web app – changing the layout of the information (still in HTML) in a way that is more suited for a mobile screen. The new layout can be attributed to a dedicated design template, or (if we didn’t throw around enough buzz-words so far) to a “responsive design” that takes into account the width of the screen on which it is presented and rearranges the elements in the layout to fit the screen.

 

To be fair, Steve Jobs said: “You don’t need apps, make Web apps.” After saying that, he realized that making apps is not where the tech world was going, and he created the App Store and billions of downloads have confirmed that this move was the right way to go.

 

• Native app – a dedicated app written in the original programming language of the mobile platform. This process creates the best results possible for an app.

 

There is a lively discussion on what is the best approach to adapt the Internet into the mobile world: Web app (because it is probably enough and it is after all the language of the Internet) or native apps (because of their strength and speed)....

What does it mean when Facebook says it has 901 million monthly active users on its network? According to figures out from the International Telecommunication Union, it effectively signifies that Facebook is the world’s largest social network by a very long shot. The ITU says in a new report that that the number of people using all social media services have passed the 1 billion mark. That is just 100 million shy of Facebook’s usage figure, giving Facebook a 90 percent share of all social networkers..."
