Town of Runners: Going For Gold

Bekoji, in the Ethiopian highlands has produced some of the world’s greatest long-distance runners and clocked up some serious Olympic hardware. Tirunesh Dibaba (double gold, Beijing 2008), world record holder Kenenisa Bekele (gold, Athens and Beijing) and Derartu Tulu (gold, Barcelona and Sydney) all hail from this town in the Oromia region of Ethiopia, as do Fatuma Roba (gold, Atlanta) and Ejegayehu Dibaba (silver, Athens).

Town of Runners, a moving and insightful new documentary by award-winning filmmaker Jerry Rothwell, follows the stories of Hawii and Alemi as they train around the clock, trying to add their names to Bekoji’s roll of fame.

BBC Sport - London 2012: Derek Redmond on his iconic Olympic moment in 1992

Ex-British 400m record holder Derek Redmond on his iconic Olympic moment in 1992....

Barcelona 1992 was my second Olympic Games and, after the injury disappointment I faced in Seoul in 1988, I was determined to get it right.

In Seoul I was never settled in the hotel or the country and it totally affected my preparations. Every athlete is different but the time difference, the food, the noise, it all played its part to unsettle me.

Then I had to withdraw with an Achilles injury.

I remember when the closing ceremony was taking place I stayed in my hotel room on my own; I didn't even watch. I never felt part of it or like I deserved to be there.

So I was determined to be a part of it in Barcelona four years later. I flew out to our base a week before everyone else, got settled into the hotel and felt good from day one....

The Future is Now: Geoffrey Mutai Smashes Course Record, Dado Outlasts Deba in Dual PR Performances at 2011 ING NYCM, by Jon Gugala, note by Larry Eder - RunBlogRun

The men's marathon has been redefined in 2011, and New York City was no exception. The other four World Marathon Majors races, which include London and Boston in the spring and Berlin and Chicago in the fall, have had their course records broken in quick succession this year. In New York, the fifth and final race in the series, the stage was set for perfection. With arguably the race's strongest men's field ever assembled, Geoffrey Mutai smashed New York's course record by over two minutes, and second and third places were all under the previous best. The 2011 New York City marathon has confirmed that a new era of marathoning is here.

Science of Running: Kenenisa Bekele's workout: How do we get there?

Here’s a selected workout that Kenenisa Bekele did around 10 days before his 2007 10k world championship win, the same race which I wrote about on an earlier blog. 16x (400 in 52-54, rest, 200 in 24-25) w/ 90sec-2min rest b/w everything
Is this some magical workout that we all should copy? No. The point of this post isn’t to talk about some amazing workout and how it did X or Y. In all honesty, one workout tells very little. Instead of marveling over the workout, I’d like to pose the question: How does one get to where they can run workouts such as the above?

Tough Mudder: The Next Big Thing

There is a phenomenon happening, nationwide. It combines 10 to 12 miles of trail running with 25 obstacles that have names like "Chernobyl Jacuzzi" (swimming through a dumpster full of ice water), "Electroshock Therapy" (running through a field of live wires, some which carry 10,000 volts of electricity), and "Boa Constrictor" (crawling through a series of tunnels, again, in freezing water). And it's not a race. Nobody wins.

Tough Mudder was born in the mind of ex-counter-terrorism specialist for the UK, Will Dean. He was told that, because the event wouldn't be competitive, it wouldn't work. Dean and partner Guy Livingstone decided to put on an event anyway, just to see. With an $8,000 budget, the first Tough Mudder event took place in Allentown, Pennsylvania, in May of 2010. Dean and Livingstone expected 500 participants. They got 5,000.
