Publishers Are Going All-In With VR

Publishers Are Going All-In With VR | Tourism Storytelling, Social Media and Mobile | Scoop.it
Since its inception in 2012, Digital Content NewFronts presentations have been all about convincing marketers to double down on digital video. But this year's extravaganza seeks to raise the bar, with publishers adding more sophisticated virtual reality and 360-degree storytelling into the mix.

Get ready -- virtual reality storytelling is going mainstream. Here's an article hot off the press from Ad Week.

As the author Lauren Johnson says, "But with Facebook and YouTube building 360-degree videos into their platforms and with headsets like Oculus Rift and Samsung Gear available to consumers, heavy hitters such as The New York Times, AOL and PopSugar are betting that brands are ready now to get on board."

Strap in and get ready for take off! Read more about who is doing what -- and when (like now) -- and follow the links to see what kind of VR storytelling is going on.

Now where did I put my Google Cardboard?!

The Phenomenon of Humans of New York: Storytelling Ethics?

The Phenomenon of Humans of New York: Storytelling Ethics? | Tourism Storytelling, Social Media and Mobile | Scoop.it

"This raises the question: is it exploitative for someone to become popular at the hands of sometimes-marginalized groups? I will touch upon Stanton’s systems of compensation and charity, but that does not take away from the general unsettling nature of sharing one’s stories, particularly for marginalized individuals, and not having a direct, uniform source of tangible compensation for every person."

Karen Dietz's curator insight, April 27, 6:37 PM

I ran across this article today and it immediately caught my eye because the topic is so rarely discussed. I know that the Humans Of New York project is wildly popular, and yet the author of this posts asks some very important questions about the storytelling going on.

Emily Jenab asks questions like, are these stories a way to evoke empathy and ethical questions without responsibility? Is there is an exploitative tone to his work? By presenting raw emotions, and unsettling images, is this enough?

Hmmm. Choosing subjects and the lense you capture their experiences through is an ethical choice. Folklorists have long wrestled with experiences of showcasing a traditional musician at a festival, let's say, where fame and notoriety follow. This isn't always a happy ending.

Storytellers find ourselves in similar around the stories we share of people. Jenab finally asks if there's an ethical guide to storytelling. Yes, there is. You can download the best practices for story work here. It's called the Story Work Best Practices Guide For Leaders. I hope it helps in some way.

Storytelling Neuroscience: Scans Show Brains Groups Words By Meaning

Storytelling Neuroscience: Scans Show Brains Groups Words By Meaning | Tourism Storytelling, Social Media and Mobile | Scoop.it
Brain maps constructed by MRI show that language meaning is distributed throughout the brain's outer layer. And it turns out that different people organize language in similar ways.

Karen Dietz's curator insight, May 9, 12:10 PM

OK -- forget the old model of right and left brain functions. The latest research on language and the brain show that different areas our brains light up around different words and their meanings. Even more interesting, the same activity around words and meanings shows up in similar patterns between people.

The implications for storytelling are that even though we've always said people interpret a story in their own way, this article suggests that a group of people could interpret a story similarly.

We've known this to be true, and now neuroscience is validating our experiences. True, the sample in this study is small, and lots more work needs to happen here. But it's a start!

Enjoy reading this short post.
