The Phenomenon of Humans of New York: Storytelling Ethics?

The Phenomenon of Humans of New York: Storytelling Ethics? | Tourism Storytelling, Social Media and Mobile | Scoop.it

"This raises the question: is it exploitative for someone to become popular at the hands of sometimes-marginalized groups? I will touch upon Stanton’s systems of compensation and charity, but that does not take away from the general unsettling nature of sharing one’s stories, particularly for marginalized individuals, and not having a direct, uniform source of tangible compensation for every person."

Karen Dietz's curator insight, April 27, 6:37 PM

I ran across this article today and it immediately caught my eye because the topic is so rarely discussed. I know that the Humans Of New York project is wildly popular, and yet the author of this posts asks some very important questions about the storytelling going on.

Emily Jenab asks questions like, are these stories a way to evoke empathy and ethical questions without responsibility? Is there is an exploitative tone to his work? By presenting raw emotions, and unsettling images, is this enough?

Hmmm. Choosing subjects and the lense you capture their experiences through is an ethical choice. Folklorists have long wrestled with experiences of showcasing a traditional musician at a festival, let's say, where fame and notoriety follow. This isn't always a happy ending.

Storytellers find ourselves in similar around the stories we share of people. Jenab finally asks if there's an ethical guide to storytelling. Yes, there is. You can download the best practices for story work here. It's called the Story Work Best Practices Guide For Leaders. I hope it helps in some way.

What makes people trust and rely on news?

What makes people trust and rely on news? | Tourism Storytelling, Social Media and Mobile | Scoop.it

A new comprehensive study, conducted by The Media Insight Project, shows that trust and reliability in news can be broken down into specific factors that publishers can put into action and consumers can recognize. The study also finds that in the digital age, several new factors largely unexamined before — such as the intrusiveness of ads, navigability, load times, and having the latest details — also are critical in determining whether consumers consider a publisher competent and worthy of trust.

The specific factors that lead people to trust and rely on a news source also vary by topic, the study finds. How much consumers value a specific component related to trust depends, for instance, on whether they are seeking news about politics or traffic and weather, let alone lifestyle. On some topics, consumers rate in‑depth reporting and expert sources more highly. In others, ease of use is of higher value.

For still others, being entertained is more important. And in social media, consumers are fairly skeptical of content and want cues of trustworthiness such as clear identification of the original reporting source.

Finally, the study sheds new light on why trust should matter to today’s publishers: It’s not only a journalistic aspiration, but a business imperative. People who put a higher premium on trust‑related factors are more engaged with news, are more likely to pay for it, install news apps, or share and promote news with their friends....

Hey -- here's a commentary about 2 new story games that you might want to check out over the weekend.

There are lots of storytelling games out there like StoryCubes that we can use in business to stimulate stories. Or to use at home just for fun.

Check out these games because the difference here is that these are designed as a narrative. Sounds like a good time :)) I wonder if they could be used in business also.
