Staycation or bleisure? Travel industry's made-up words

Staycation or bleisure? Travel industry's made-up words | Tourism Social Media | Scoop.it

Hotels advertise "bleisure" packages. The Thai Tourism Authority is promoting "honeyteering." And a Mississippi TV anchor told advocates of gay equality to "go on gaycation."

Whatever you're doing on vacation, chances are there's a made-up word to describe it. Combine honeymoon and volunteering, you get honeyteering. Combine business and leisure, you get bleisure. Add glamour to a camping trip with wine, steak and scented candles, and you're glamping.

How To Book Your Next Plane Ticket To Get The Best Deal | Tourism Social Media | Scoop.it

You already know that you should be booking your plane ticket 54 days before take-off (if all else fails, you should usually book between 104 to 29 days pre-trip).

And while that's all fine and good, there are various nitty-gritty details you should be paying attention to when buying that ticket -- like day of flight and where to book. Luckily, the experts seem to agree on a few key points.

What if Everything You Know About Social Media Marketing is Wrong?

What if Everything You Know About Social Media Marketing is Wrong? | Tourism Social Media | Scoop.it

...If you are employed in social media marketing, it is time for a healthy dose of reality followed by some serious soul searching and career planning. Some of you are lucky enough to work in the rare companies that create advocates with great products, service and mission and thus are equipped to leverage social media for marketing gain; most work at companies that have inflated their opportunities in the medium and are floundering with their social media marketing and content strategies.

Here's the way a large number of social media professionals today go about justifying their programs, along with some recent data that may (and should) scare the hell out of you if you work in social media marketing...

wanderingsalsero's curator insight, April 6, 6:30 AM

All I can say is that I never really did get 'on' this bandwagon in the sense of trying to milk it for money.  I've always thought that most of what I saw/see on FB and Twitter is extremely silly bullshit  Who has time for such stuff is hard for me to image...especially nowadays with the economy in the tank.

I've always thought that any kind of content should have some real value to the reader whether they're your customer or not.  And furthermore that it should be just as much a type of self expression as anything else.

People will make a decision about whether or not they want to 'like' or 'follow' you based on the perception they get of you as a person...or, in the case of companies, by their impression on what the companies really stands for and what they 'do' (and how it benefits people).

Ready, Set, Go! app - disaster planning for the tourism industry

Ready, Set, Go! app - disaster planning for the tourism industry | Tourism Social Media | Scoop.it

“The Ready, Set, Go! app transforms a person’s smartphone into a disaster management headquarters.  Essentially, it’s like having a digital business continuity plan which holds all the essential information to get a business up and running again after an incident or crisis.”

Mr Gschwind said research has shown 80 per cent of businesses without a continuity plan don’t survive two years after a major crisis (Source: APEC, 2008).

We also know that for every dollar invested in disaster mitigation, three dollars is saved in recovery costs,” he said (Source: Queensland Government, 2001)."
