Survey forecasts 17 percent increase in 2014 Asian travel budget

Travelzoo Asia Pacific has released its annual subscriber survey findings that show the Asian travel appetite in 2014 will get stronger, with a forecasted increase of 17 percent in travel budgets over 2013. The results also highlighted transformations in the vacation spending patterns of Mainland Chinese travelers, with the majority willing to spend more for upgrading their holiday experiences and high-end accommodations.

The survey is an annual initiative by Travelzoo to map changes in travel attitudes across Asia Pacific, while providing a benchmark for the regional travel industry. It was conducted in collaboration with WIMI, a consumer insights consultancy firm, from November 24 to December 15, 2013. Over 3,400 Travelzoo subscribers from Australia, China, Hong Kong, Japan and Taiwan participated in the study.

Valuable insight from Jeannie Walters clearly defining the different areas that will impact the #customer #experience.

The end goal is the last point:

"There will be several times in 2014 when you’ll shake your head in disbelief at how wonderful something is. You’ll post images on social media about the best ones, and rave to friends about the corner store/the customer service rep/the bank who showed you they care."

We are all looking forward to such positive experiences.

Any additional trends you would anticipate?

At 97m and growing, China has most outbound tourists

At 97m and growing, China has most outbound tourists | Tourism Innovation | Scoop.it

97 million Chinese traveled abroad in 2013, beating the 2012 mark by roughly 14 million, according to the China National Tourism Administration. The number is expected to surpass 100 million in 2014.

Most Chinese tourists traveled to Asian and European countries, the report said, accounting for 75 percent of overseas tourists in those countries.

Song Rui, director of the center, said the 2013 figures for overseas spending have yet to be released, but there will "definitely" be a new record by Chinese tourists. "Chinese tourists spend so much abroad that some foreigners are calling us the 'walking wallets', " Song said, who added that Chinese travelers who purchased luxury products during the 2012 London Olympics led Britons to coin the term "Peking Pound" for Chinese spending power.

Tourism within China has also grown over the past year. The country hosted 3.2 billion tourists in 2013, according to the Tourist Research Center report, beating 2012's mark by 300 million.

Luxury travelers not so social when planning trips

A new Luxury Link survey of travelers with more than $100,000 a year in household income finds that social media isn't as important as it is to others in the trip-planning process. Where are these high-end travelers headed? Croatia and Portugal are said to be top destinations this year, while Europe and the Caribbean are still hot spots.

Travel brands capitalise on social trend of our time - the selfie

Travel brands capitalise on social trend of our time - the selfie | Tourism Innovation | Scoop.it

After being named Word of the Year, the “selfie” has started to emerge in travel industry as a viable form of marketing and creating a community.

For those with heads buried in the sand for the past year or so, Wikipedia defines the selfie as:

“a type of self-portrait photograph, typically taken with a hand-held digital camera or camera phone.”

Tourradar (TLabs here), a group booking marketplace has launched a contest where users have to post a picture of “groupie”, a term for so-called group-selfies (as opposed to exuberant music fans).

But, Austria-based TourRadar has twisted the rules of the game somewhat by insisting on none of the groupie images should have its subjects look at the camera.

Groupies that stands out, in terms of originality or a stunning location will win prizes from Tourradar. Users can send the Groupie to Tourradar’s Facebook page, or Tweet to @TourRadar with the hashtag #groupie.

On the other hand, Malaysia Airlines has launched ‘MHInsure Travel Photo Contest’ where the Facebook fans (of Malaysia Airlines) are asked to upload their selfie in the MHInsure Selfie Facebook app. The airline will approve the selfie once it meets its terms and conditions.

Once approved, the owner of the photo should acquire 25 likes for the (selfie) photo. This contest runs until mid-February, with the top three pictures by vote wining free flights on the carrier.

MHInsure is the travel insurance product that customers can buy while booking a flight with Malaysia Airlines

How to Create a Mobile-First Content Marketing Strategy

How to Create a Mobile-First Content Marketing Strategy | Tourism Innovation | Scoop.it

While there are tremendous opportunities for marketers on the mobile channel, there are also big challenges that need to be overcome. Use these tips to create a mobile-first content marketing strategy...

A recent study by Nielsen and Google suggests that 77 percent of mobile searches are performed at work or home — areas where a PC is also likely to have been available. Yet, mobile website visitors have a 9.56 percent higher bounce rate on an average than desktop visitors. These conflicting stats demonstrate that, while there are tremendous opportunities for marketers on the mobile channel, there are also big challenges that need to be overcome.

Indeed, the 93 percent of B2B marketers who create content (as indicated by CMI’s most recent research) should mobile-optimize their content marketing strategy in order to extend the time visitors spend engaging with their content, and convert more of those mobile visitors into customers. Here are a few usable tips to help you do just that...
