Australian tourism hits new highs: state of the industry 2015 [report] | Tourism Innovation | Scoop.it

Tourism Research Australia has released the 2015 State of Industry report, which reviews the Australian tourism industry's performance in 2014-15 across a range of key performance indicators. Among the highlights include:

 

International and domestic tourism continue to grow and set new records.With China and India leading growth, inbound visitor arrivals were up 7 per cent to a record 6.6 million in 2014-15.International tourism expenditure reached a new high of $33.4 billion following the growth of 10 per cent - the strongest recorded for a financial year since the Sydney Olympics.Domestic overnight trips reached 83.2 million while overnight expenditure increased 4 per cent to $55.4 billion.Total overnight expenditure increased 6 per cent to $88.8 billion which sees overnight expenditure tracking close to the Tourism 2020 target at this time.

According to this article from Travel Weekly, adventure travel is the next travel sector on the rise, on the back of the increasing popularity of luxury travel and food and wine tourism. The estimated market size has surpassed a quarter of a billion dollars in Australia, and is forecast to grow alongside vast campaigns from Tasmania and the Sunshine Coast. According to Tim Lewis, Director of the Adventure Travel Expo, the adventure travel market is constantly evolving. "New segments are emerging according to stronger demand from food lovers, solo women travellers, eco ambassadors and backpackers looking for a better selfies! As more people immerse themselves in destinations with the intention of conquering a dirt trail by foot or bicycle, jumping off waterfalls or diving among sharks, it is less about age, background or income and more about motivation, self-fulfilment and living life." World Travel Market Global Trends Report 2015 | Tourism Innovation | Scoop.it

According to the WTM's 2015 Global Trends Report, geopolitical events are further impacting economic performance, with conflicts affecting certain destinations in the Middle East and North Africa, Russia and Ukraine. Nonetheless, travel continues to shine globally, with arrivals reaching over 1.1 billion in 2014, up by 4.3%. 2015 is forecast to see slightly slower growth, estimated at 3.7%. The International Monetary Fund predicts global GDP growth of 3.2% for 2015, with advanced economies showing an improved outlook with growth slowing in emerging markets. The Asia Pacific region is predicted to see the fastest growth in inbound expenditure over the next five years. Despite a recent slowdown, outbound Chinese travellers are still on the rise, reaching over 84 million in 2014, with increasing disposable incomes favouring overseas trips. Download the report.

Deloitte: Travel Consumer 2015 Report

Deloitte has surveyed over 40,000 respondents about their travel activities, finding that travel has changed from being a seller's to a buyer's market. To adapt to this change, travel businesses need to undergo their own transformation from a product-centric to a consumer-centric model and put the consumer perspective at the heart of every business decision. Key findings include:

 

59% of holidaymakers compare prices online, as consumers maintain their recessionary behaviour.holidaymakers are sharing experiences and influencing each other, as 42% use review websites.59% say these sites have the most influence on their booking decision.31% of holidaymakers have posted a travel-related review on a review website.33% of consumers used two or more devices when researching their most recent holiday.
