The evolution of volunteer tourism

The evolution of volunteer tourism | Tourism Innovation | Scoop.it

Combining volunteering with tourism may seem like a good idea on the surface, but it is usually an excuse for a tour provider to overcharge participants with limited skill sets who think they have something to offer to a poor rural village because they are travelling from the U.S. or another first-world country. Like missionaries, voluntourists typically disrupt local traditions, take business from local workers and leave before the job is finished. And when that job is finished, it is often a poorly built well, school room or orphanage. However, it's not always a nightmare. Skift spoke with Ethan Gelber, editor of "Adventures Less Ordinary: How to Travel and Do Good" about what happens when the reality of volunteerism matches the dream.

After disasters, wellness tourism recovers 170% more

After disasters, wellness tourism recovers 170% more | Tourism Innovation | Scoop.it

At the World Travel & Tourism Council’s (WTTC) Global Summit in Madrid, Spain, the Global Wellness Institute (GWI) released new data suggesting wellness tourism could rebound faster than the tourism sector as a whole following major disasters, such as wars, acts of terrorism, drug violence or natural disasters. The ten nations analysed that have experienced either historic or shorter-term disruptions will see, on average, an annual 7.2% growth rate in inbound trips overall, but a greater 19.5% annual rise in inbound wellness tourism trips. This represents roughly 170% more inbound wellness-focused trips across those five years. The GWI defines wellness tourism as all travel associated with maintaining or enhancing one's personal wellbeing, and this travel category's global growth is estimated at 9.1% annually from 2012-2017, or 58% faster than the 5.8% annual growth rate for global tourism overall. Wellness tourism can play a major role in the image-building that is critical for nations that have experienced crisis-driven tourism disruptions.

8 Brands Using the Collaborative Economy to Market with the Crowd

8 Brands Using the Collaborative Economy to Market with the Crowd | Tourism Innovation | Scoop.it
It pays to share, as the crowd shares your brand for you.

Marketers first adopted the internet and then social media. The next digital phase is the Collaborative Economy. What’s that? If you’ve heard of Airbnb, Uber, Lyft, Kickstarter, Indiegogo, and the Maker Movement, this is the Collaborative Economy.

Just as social media enabled people to create media and then share media, in this next phase, the Collaborative Economy enables people to create their own physical goods as well as share their existing physical goods. In both of these examples, they are using digital technologies to make the sharing happen.
