Prisoners of English by George Haynal - The Globalist

Prisoners of English by George Haynal - The Globalist | scooping the world | Scoop.it
How are native English speakers handicapping themselves by not learning other languages?

In a globalized world where English is the dominant language of commerce and diplomacy, it's tempting for native English speakers to take the easy route. But not learning other languages comes at a great cost, explains George Haynal. Fluency in other languages opens a critical window into other cultures and mindsets that would otherwise remain closed.

Gisela Moniz's insight:

The same is valid to other languages natives, and not the least Portuguese:

their domain of their language is being completelly deconstructed (late orthographic legislation being now a main cause!).

Gisela Moniz's insight:

I've been in touch with Paulo from long ago, meeting him now and then.. He pursued obssessively his subjects through his dark camera until becoming himself a sepctre or should i say an incarnation of his obssessions...

«Paulo Nozolino only makes black and white photographs and they are dominated by an impossible darkness that seems impenetrable to light. The photographs were made all over the world — notably in countries of the Arab world — but in the majority of cases it would be difficult to attribute a specific location to them. Photographs from Auschwitz are the decisive exception. Auschwitz appears as the absolute place and time that orientates everything else. In thirty years of a career as a photographer, Nozolino has constantly intensified his tragic vision of reality: this is visualised in pictures that originate from his own biography and travels; in pictures of men, women and children; in pictures of birth, love making and death.
FAR CRY assembles for the first time photographs from Nozolino’s different projects over the years, to form a new narrative, untold until now: the narrative of beginning and ending, and at the same time the narrative of his life’s work.»

Surrealistic Landscape of Deadvlei, Namibia | Amusing Planet

Surrealistic Landscape of Deadvlei, Namibia | Amusing Planet | scooping the world | Scoop.it

The picture below is not that of a painting. It was taken inside the Namib-Naukluft Park in Namibia, in a strange and alien landscape called Dead Vlei. Although sounds similar to “dead valley”, Dead Vlei is not an actually valley. The term means "dead marsh" (from English dead, and Afrikaans vlei, a lake or marsh in a valley between the dunes).

Deadvlei is a white clay pan located near the more famous salt pan of Sossusvlei, scattered with hundreds of dead Acacia trees that once thrived when water from the Tsauchab River soaked this piece of land. Some 900 years ago the river diverted its course, leaving Dead Vlei literally high and dry. Dead Vlei has been claimed to be surrounded by the highest sand dunes in the world, the highest reaching 300-400 meters which rest on a sandstone terrace.

Claire Cambier's curator insight, July 2, 2013 1:20 AM

Cet article reflète mon point de vue sur l'avenir du community/content management : un besoin de dire plus en parlant moins, sous peine de nous noyer nous-même et nos interlocuteurs dans un océan de contenus, posts, tweets etc.

Beppe Andrianò's curator insight, July 2, 2013 4:34 AM
