Africa in Transition » Lagos a Success Story?

Africa in Transition » Lagos a Success Story? | Top CAD Experts updates | Scoop.it
Campbell tracks political and security developments across sub-Saharan Africa.

The UN estimated the city’s population at 11.2 million in 2011. The New York Times estimates that it is now at least twenty-one million, surpassing Cairo as Africa’s largest city. It is clear that whatever the size, and however the city is defined, Lagos is the center of one of the largest urban areas in the world. With a population of perhaps 1.4 million as recently as 1970, its growth has been stupendous. Rice estimates that Lagos generates about a quarter of Nigeria’s total gross domestic product. The center of Nigeria’s modern economy, Lagos has many millionaires, but Rice estimates that two thirds of the population are slum dwellers.

Patch Based Synthesis for Single Depth Image Super-Resolution (ECCV 2012)

"We present an algorithm to synthetically increase the resolution of a solitary depth image using only a generic database of local patches. While patch based approaches for upsampling intensity images continue to improve, patching remains unexplored for depth images, possibly because their characteristics are quite different. Significantly, modern range sensors measure depths with non-Gaussian noise and at lower starting resolutions than typical visible-light cameras.

We match against the height field of each low resolution input depth patch, and search our database for a list of appropriate high resolution candidate patches. Selecting the right candidate at each location in the depth image is then posed as a Markov random field labeling problem. Our experiments also show how important further depth-specific processing, such as noise removal and correct patch normalization, dramatically improves our results compared to steps typically followed for patch-based processing of intensity images. Perhaps surprisingly, even better results are achieved on a variety of real test scenes by seeding our algorithm with synthetic training depth data."

Absolute Comfort Shaping Nevada Desert Vacation Home

Absolute Comfort Shaping Nevada Desert Vacation Home | Top CAD Experts updates | Scoop.it

Designed to occupy 1,200 square feet of building space and 900 square feet of exterior deck, this vacation home is actually the prototype of the T-modulome, a prefabricated building system first developed in 2002 by Nottoscale.

This stretch of desert near Scotty’s Junction, Nevada, had to be transformed in order to accommodate a modern lifestyle – a well was dug and a leach field created, electricity was brought to the site and a dirt path was built to lead up to the wood, concrete and glass house.

The powerful connection between the inside and outside was created by placing floor-to-ceiling windows in all spaces and slightly raised the building on a concrete plinth to take advantage of the views...
