Spanish Pavilion at Floriade 2012 by Pulgon Diseño

Spanish Pavilion at Floriade 2012 by Pulgon Diseño | Top CAD Experts updates | Scoop.it

Pulgon Diseño have designed the Spanish Pavilion at Floriade 2012 in Venlo, The Netherlands.

The construction criterion arose from the conceptual approaches that have resulted in the slogan “naturally diverse”, highlighting the importance of diversity and natural richness. Likewise, the idea Cradle to Cradle is also present in the exhibition, and the designed spaces will allude to cycles and continuity as added and essential values, in a modern concept of sustainability and of the use of natural resources.

Some of the materials, serving both as support and as coating and paving, have had different previous uses: wood from fruit boxes, planks and wood from building works, demolition beams, sleepers. Others come from remainders of agriculture products such as nut shells or trunks from burnt forests. This way, the C2C remains unchanged, in terms of conceptuality and formality...

Social Banking

Social Banking | Top CAD Experts updates | Scoop.it

The time and energy we can invest in others socially – in terms of building and maintaining friendships – is a lot like money; we cannot spend it in two places at once. Given that we have a limited budget with which to build and maintain relationships, it’s of vital importance for some cognitive system to assess the probability of social returns from its investment; likewise, individuals have a vested interest in manipulating that assessment in others in order to further their goals.

The Communicative Mode of Architecture – MAS CONTEXT

The Communicative Mode of Architecture – MAS CONTEXT | Top CAD Experts updates | Scoop.it

We can think of architecture as just another form of cultural practice. And like them, it too is a form of media. Its literal media may be the material it specifies: brick, stone, glass steel, concrete or whatever. But it becomes a medium in and of itself through the way it arranges these materials. The arrangement of these materials into form and space turn them, like the arrangement of words on a page, pixels on a screen, or paint onto canvas, into information. We can think of architecture, then, as a concentration of information assembled into built form.

Africa in Transition » Lagos a Success Story?

Africa in Transition » Lagos a Success Story? | Top CAD Experts updates | Scoop.it
Campbell tracks political and security developments across sub-Saharan Africa.

The UN estimated the city’s population at 11.2 million in 2011. The New York Times estimates that it is now at least twenty-one million, surpassing Cairo as Africa’s largest city. It is clear that whatever the size, and however the city is defined, Lagos is the center of one of the largest urban areas in the world. With a population of perhaps 1.4 million as recently as 1970, its growth has been stupendous. Rice estimates that Lagos generates about a quarter of Nigeria’s total gross domestic product. The center of Nigeria’s modern economy, Lagos has many millionaires, but Rice estimates that two thirds of the population are slum dwellers.

OpenROV Explores Aquarius

"One World One Ocean presents, in association with Liquid Pictures 3D -- Mission Aquarius -- a project of Aquarius Reef Base. Join the expedition athttp://oneworldoneocean.org/aquarius --

Introducing an open-source, tele-robotic submarine with live streaming video. You control it from the surface, and you see what it sees. Gone are the days of super expensive remotely operated vehicles. Now Open ROV is crowd-sourcing exploration, because a lot of amazing discoveries were made by chance, and the more people out there exploring, the more chance we have of understanding the mysteries of the ocean. Join us on the first real test of this exciting new technology in a dynamic ocean environment, at Aquarius.

"It shouldn't take a research grant to do exploration, it should take curiosity," says creator Eric Stackpole.

Since 1993, America's "inner space station" has helped us understand the disappearance of coral reefs, train NASA astronauts for space and research sea sponges, the source of two cancer drugs. The discoveries made at Aquarius have opened our eyes to how little we really know about the vast complexity of the ocean. It is one of the planet's most important brain trusts, and this is part of its last scheduled mission."

Compliant Control - Pole / Arm Climb

"This clip demonstrates recent work to develop compliant controllers for our lab's snake robots. These controllers allow the robot to automatically adapt its shape to changes in its environment. Until now most of our motions, including pole climbing, have been remote-controlled.

In this video the robot autonomously climbs a 4" pole, transitions to a 2" pole, and then to an arm, demonstrating that the controller is able to adapt to different diameters of objects without exerting too much force for to be uncomfortable in human contact."

San Francisco Approves Huge Eco-Makeover

San Francisco Approves Huge Eco-Makeover | Top CAD Experts updates | Scoop.it
San Francisco is clearly embracing the 21st century trend of new urbanism. An inspiring proposal was approved last week to turn the heart of San Fran’s downtown area into a mecca of urban living.

Along with the existing plans for a new transit hub, all together it will create a more walkable, sustainable, and dynamic center that promotes core environmental values to the area. The Planning Commission of S.F. approved the addition of six new 850-foot skyscrapers along with one that will be 1,070 feet, superseding the skyline summit of the Transamerica Pyramid building, making it the tallest building on the west coast. In addition, a comprehensive transit hub nicknamed the Grand Central Terminal of the West is already in the works...

This four-bedroom vacation home is a study in spatial efficiency, coming in under 2,000 SF of living area including 1,700 SF of modular construction and 240 SF of site-built construction.

The design can be adapted to any site of the owners choosing. The two-story factory-built modular house has a reverse living plan to maximize available terraces and views for the primary family kitchen, dining and living areas, while tucking three bedrooms and a master suite into the lower level.

Conceived specifically to touch lightly on the landscape both during and after construction, this home is ideal for flood-prone areas. This home is comprised of two living volumes that are joined by a prefabricated, site assembled entrance staircase that provides an immediate visual and physical connection to the upper level.

Each volume is made of two stacked modular units, that when raised on piloti, allow the landscape to move through and under the house that provides an environmentally sensitive and visually dramatic design solution...
