The benefits of using prefabrication are many, and can result in beautiful homes that function just as well or better than custom ones built on site.

Using modular techniques for construction allows for stronger purchasing power. The process of building on site is also much quicker—and cheaper. Prefabrication is also greener since it uses computer technology to manufacture the modules, which creates 50% to 75% less material waste. The one limitation of prefabrication is that the pieces of the home need to be able to be shipped from the factory to the site of assembly.

But the benefits of prefabrication are many, and can result in beautiful homes that function just as well or better than custom ones built on site.

This four-bedroom vacation home is a study in spatial efficiency, coming in under 2,000 SF of living area including 1,700 SF of modular construction and 240 SF of site-built construction.

The design can be adapted to any site of the owners choosing. The two-story factory-built modular house has a reverse living plan to maximize available terraces and views for the primary family kitchen, dining and living areas, while tucking three bedrooms and a master suite into the lower level.

Conceived specifically to touch lightly on the landscape both during and after construction, this home is ideal for flood-prone areas. This home is comprised of two living volumes that are joined by a prefabricated, site assembled entrance staircase that provides an immediate visual and physical connection to the upper level.

Each volume is made of two stacked modular units, that when raised on piloti, allow the landscape to move through and under the house that provides an environmentally sensitive and visually dramatic design solution...

Affordable because Connect:Homes has a patent-pending technology that allows them to build modules to 90% complete at the factory, surpassing industry standards that are typically closer to 50%. This reduces finish time and reducing construction costs considerably...

The house on the shore with a view of the Wadden Sea is an energy-plus house, which means that it produces more electricity and heat than it uses.


This was achieved without compromising on the exclusive qualities of a large home, including panoramic sea-views. The architecture uses clear and simple expression, open and transparent to the sea and more closed and private towards the neighbors. The unusual geometry of the volume is combined with a calm and unpretentious detailing, and a restrained material palette.

Designed with ‘passive house’ principles, the home is compact in form, with large windows facing the view to the south-west, to make optimal passive use of the sun’s heat. The angle also respects the shoreline protection zone, creating a triangular floor plan. The sloping roof is angled to optimize the performance of the solar heating cells. Passive solar heat gain is absorbed and accumulated in the interior concrete walls and floor slabs, while the south-west facing balcony and overhangs shade the facades and control the amount of seasonal solar energy. The balcony is a free-standing concrete slab completely eliminating any cold-bridging to the interior...

Designed to occupy 1,200 square feet of building space and 900 square feet of exterior deck, this vacation home is actually the prototype of the T-modulome, a prefabricated building system first developed in 2002 by Nottoscale.

 

This stretch of desert near Scotty’s Junction, Nevada, had to be transformed in order to accommodate a modern lifestyle – a well was dug and a leach field created, electricity was brought to the site and a dirt path was built to lead up to the wood, concrete and glass house.

The powerful connection between the inside and outside was created by placing floor-to-ceiling windows in all spaces and slightly raised the building on a concrete plinth to take advantage of the views...

There are so many things about this building for a TreeHugger to love. It's straw, the up and coming ultimate renewable resource. But conventional strawbale construction is slow, and if the stuff gets wet it is a problem, so it's prefabricated,, built in a nearby shed. The straw is compressed into a wood frame, made of our favorite cross-laminated timber. And it couldn't get more local; you can see the field that was the source of the straw from the building.

GE Energy Financial Services and several other funders have invested $22 million in Project Frog, a company that provides climate-sensitive design and fabrication of modular high-performance buildings. 

Project Frog began as a sustainable alternative to conventional classroom trailers and is now branching out into healthcare and other markets by usinng computer modeling to optimize buildings for their designated sites, emphasizing energy efficiency, natural ventilation, daylighting, and indoor air quality. According to Project Frog, the pre-engineered buildings can be constructed in 1 to 6 months and can readily be designed for net-zero energy or to achieve LEED certification.
