Research Paper

Top gear is a British television show that talks about motor vehicles and provides informative reviews on these motor vehicles. Motor vehicles can range from cars to motorcycles to pretty much anything that has wheels. The show is directed by Brian Klein and is presented by Jeremy Clarkson, James May, and Richard Hammond. The executive producer is Andy Wilman. Top gear started in 1977 as a conventional motoring magazine show. It was re-launched in 2002 and has been a huge success ever since. It has developed over the years to a humorous and sometimes a controversial television series. Top Gear is shown on BBC, Mondays at 9:00pm. The program brings about 350 million viewers per week from over 170 different countries, to watch one of the greatest car television shows out there. It has only become a huge success ever since it was revamped. Some of the new ideas they came up with to help draw the viewers into the show is “Star in a Reasonably Priced Car”, “The Cool Wall”, “The News”, “Power Laps”, and adding new races and competitions for the cars that are being tested.

After watching three episodes of Top Gear the main theme of the show is to inform the viewers about the new cars that are coming out and to provide reviews on the new cars. Cars can range from a Fiat 500 (daily driver) to a McLaren LP-1 super car. These cars are taken on different tests to help provide the viewer with the best information about the car. Sometimes this information can be controversial and incorrect. Not everyone sees the same thing in a car. Some individuals like larger back seats and others like only two seats and a large engine. That is where the show can be skewed.

The first episode that was observed was from season 18 episode 2. This episode talked about China’s car history and NASCAR. Jeremy and James flew to China to investigate the Chinese car manufactures and how they trying to keep up with the rest of the world. The Chinese have gone from making almost no cars at all in the early 1990’s to becoming one of the world’s largest car produces. The only fault with this is the cars they are making are replicas of existing cars today. They go on to explain that China has been sued over very similar looking cars but China has won all the law suits. After Jeremy and James finished their segment on the Chinese cars, Richard went down to Texas to get more incite on NASCAR. This segment talked about NASCAR and how it is a growing sport in the American culture. During the breaks between the show the commercials that mostly played were Mercedes S Class commercials, the new Ipad Air, Vontage, the new Xbox One (Forza 5), Car insurance (Esurance), and other BBC television Ads. The relation between these commercials and the television show is that all these ads apply to a man that likes video games, wants a Mercedes and should think about getting better or cheaper car insurance for their current car. All in all this episodes message was to teach the viewer more about the world today whether it be in China or in the United States.

The second episode that was watched was from season 18 episode 3. This episode had James May review the Vauxhall Corsa Nurburgring Edition, and send Clarkson and Hammond to direct a movie chase for the movie “The Sweeney”. James May compared the Corsa to the Fiat Panda and how just because its slow doesn’t mean it be fun. After James May segment it went into Jeremy and Richard helping direct a car chase with a Jaguar XRF and a Focus ST. This episode of Top Gear conveyed the message about how cars today can be interesting even if they are not super cars. During the show most of the ads that came up were about AT&T, BBC movie promotions, BBC television shows, rent a car, and car manufactures. Just like the previous episode the target audience is male between the ages of 16 to 35. Some of the commercials are geared more towards the younger audience, such as Ipad commercials and movies and other commercials are for the older audience, such as the insurance or credit cards.

After watching 3 hours of top gear along with commercials and two bags of pop corn the flow of this television show is pretty continuous. There are some discontinuities such as odd commercials that didn’t fit. An example of this is a Jamaica trip or a chemical manufacture commercial. The only reason that these commercials might have been used is to address the older viewers that might be interested in the more expensive cars that are featured in the show. The general theme of all the commercials is geared toward the male, do it yourself, mature or young adult. Most commercials dealt with car related companies or an adult that would need help with their finical problems because of cars.

'Top Gear' Revs Up For Another Three Years | Top Gear BBC America | Scoop.it
LONDON – BBC Worldwide, the public broadcaster's money-making arm, has signed fresh three-year commercial deals with Top Gear presenters Jeremy Clarkson, James May and Richard Hammond.
Charles Wolfe's insight:

This article is about the hit show Top Gear and how they just signed a new 3 year deal with BBC2. This is a huge for a show that is as old as it is. It also mentions how they will get a cut of the commercial deals that they have in between there shows. Most of the commercials that are shown are insurance, car manufactures, electronics and other car related companies. This is big for other car related products.

Neil Midgley reviews the first episode of the new series of Top Gear on BBC Two.
Charles Wolfe's insight:

I do not agree with this article. It talks about how top gear is one of those shows that is just on in the back ground, but it is very informational when it is on. It also states that it is for a specific audience and that audience is a guy that is in love with cars. I am one of those guys that like cars.

Top Gear (TV Series 2002– )

Top Gear (TV Series 2002– ) | Top Gear BBC America | Scoop.it
With Richard Hammond, Jeremy Clarkson, James May, Ben Collins. Jeremy, Richard and James talk about everything car-related. From new cars to how they're fueled, this show has it all.
Charles Wolfe's insight:

I found this review of top gear my favorite of all. This really sums up the show and how they put so much time and effort into each shot. They use different camera lens for different styles and how that all conveys back to the car that they are reviewing. It all comes down to the car and how they make it seem. If they make it seem like it’s a pile of junk then most people won’t go out and buy it, but if they make it seem like it’s the best car in the world then it could potentially increase the car sales.

Top Gear row: Tesla loses appeal over Jeremy Clarkson review

Top Gear row: Tesla loses appeal over Jeremy Clarkson review | Top Gear BBC America | Scoop.it
Appeal court dismisses claim that show damaged car's sales, after manufacturer gets into online spat with New York Times. By Josh Halliday
Charles Wolfe's insight:

This article talks about how Jeremy Clarkson reviews the Tesla sports car and his review made investors change their mind on the product. I find this hard to believe that just because of a TV it could cause a car company to lose many. Most viewers of the show would not be able to afford a Tesla sports car. This sparks a long debate of how the show actually has a large play on cars reviews and sales today.
