Top gear is a British television show that talks about motor vehicles and provides informative reviews on these motor vehicles. Motor vehicles can range from cars to motorcycles to pretty much anything that has wheels. The show is directed by Brian Klein and is presented by Jeremy Clarkson, James May, and Richard Hammond. The executive producer is Andy Wilman. Top gear started in 1977 as a conventional motoring magazine show. It was re-launched in 2002 and has been a huge success ever since. It has developed over the years to a humorous and sometimes a controversial television series. Top Gear is shown on BBC, Mondays at 9:00pm. The program brings about 350 million viewers per week from over 170 different countries, to watch one of the greatest car television shows out there. It has only become a huge success ever since it was revamped. Some of the new ideas they came up with to help draw the viewers into the show is “Star in a Reasonably Priced Car”, “The Cool Wall”, “The News”, “Power Laps”, and adding new races and competitions for the cars that are being tested.
After watching three episodes of Top Gear the main theme of the show is to inform the viewers about the new cars that are coming out and to provide reviews on the new cars. Cars can range from a Fiat 500 (daily driver) to a McLaren LP-1 super car. These cars are taken on different tests to help provide the viewer with the best information about the car. Sometimes this information can be controversial and incorrect. Not everyone sees the same thing in a car. Some individuals like larger back seats and others like only two seats and a large engine. That is where the show can be skewed.
The first episode that was observed was from season 18 episode 2. This episode talked about China’s car history and NASCAR. Jeremy and James flew to China to investigate the Chinese car manufactures and how they trying to keep up with the rest of the world. The Chinese have gone from making almost no cars at all in the early 1990’s to becoming one of the world’s largest car produces. The only fault with this is the cars they are making are replicas of existing cars today. They go on to explain that China has been sued over very similar looking cars but China has won all the law suits. After Jeremy and James finished their segment on the Chinese cars, Richard went down to Texas to get more incite on NASCAR. This segment talked about NASCAR and how it is a growing sport in the American culture. During the breaks between the show the commercials that mostly played were Mercedes S Class commercials, the new Ipad Air, Vontage, the new Xbox One (Forza 5), Car insurance (Esurance), and other BBC television Ads. The relation between these commercials and the television show is that all these ads apply to a man that likes video games, wants a Mercedes and should think about getting better or cheaper car insurance for their current car. All in all this episodes message was to teach the viewer more about the world today whether it be in China or in the United States.
The second episode that was watched was from season 18 episode 3. This episode had James May review the Vauxhall Corsa Nurburgring Edition, and send Clarkson and Hammond to direct a movie chase for the movie “The Sweeney”. James May compared the Corsa to the Fiat Panda and how just because its slow doesn’t mean it be fun. After James May segment it went into Jeremy and Richard helping direct a car chase with a Jaguar XRF and a Focus ST. This episode of Top Gear conveyed the message about how cars today can be interesting even if they are not super cars. During the show most of the ads that came up were about AT&T, BBC movie promotions, BBC television shows, rent a car, and car manufactures. Just like the previous episode the target audience is male between the ages of 16 to 35. Some of the commercials are geared more towards the younger audience, such as Ipad commercials and movies and other commercials are for the older audience, such as the insurance or credit cards.
After watching 3 hours of top gear along with commercials and two bags of pop corn the flow of this television show is pretty continuous. There are some discontinuities such as odd commercials that didn’t fit. An example of this is a Jamaica trip or a chemical manufacture commercial. The only reason that these commercials might have been used is to address the older viewers that might be interested in the more expensive cars that are featured in the show. The general theme of all the commercials is geared toward the male, do it yourself, mature or young adult. Most commercials dealt with car related companies or an adult that would need help with their finical problems because of cars.
