These look like great ideas to encourage media literacy as well. You have to understand media from the inside to create media. Nothing makes you more media literate then learning to create it.

Daily Themes - A place to write better

Daily Themes - A place to write better | Tools and apps for ELT | Scoop.it
Daily Themes is a place to write better. We make writing painless, simple and fun. Write a hundred words a day and give feedback on others' writing.
Richard Whiteside's insight:

This looks like it might be a real winner. Based on a writing course run at Yale, students are encouraged to write 100 words every day. In this version, they can receive feedback from peers, or can pay a subscription for professional feedback. Analytics track progress and seem to add a game-like aspect. 36 Core Teacher Apps For Inquiry Learning With iPads - TeachThought

36 Core Teacher Apps For Inquiry Learning With iPads - TeachThought | Tools and apps for ELT | Scoop.it

"The interest in inquiry-based learning seems to ebb and flow based on–well, it’s not clear why it ever ebbs.

In short, it is a student-centered, Constructivist approach to learning that requires critical thinking, and benefits from technology, collaboration, resourcefulness, and other modern learning skills that never seem to fall out of favor themselves.

Regardless, St Oliver Plunkett Primary School has put together two very useful images that can help you populate your iPad–or classroom of iPads–with apps that support both inquiry-based learning (the second image below), and a more general approach to pedagogy based on Apple’s uber-popular tablet (the top image)."

Top Tools for Learning 2013

Top Tools for Learning 2013 | Tools and apps for ELT | Scoop.it

Here are the Top 100 Tools for Learning 2013 –  the results of the 7th Annual Learning Tools Survey. The list was compiled by Jane Hart from the votes of 500+ learning professionals from 48 countries worldwide.

“A learning tool is a tool for your own personal or professional learning or one you use for teaching or training.”

Richard Whiteside's insight:

I normally wouldn't share such a big list, but this one is pretty definitive. More for engaging in professional development than using with language learners, but then I suppose that depends on your context and your learners. All these tools are useful to know about for one reason or another.

How Khan Academy is using design to pave the way for the future of education

How Khan Academy is using design to pave the way for the future of education | Tools and apps for ELT | Scoop.it
The design team at Khan Academy is helping lay the foundation for a revolution in education.
Richard Whiteside's insight:

I like this quote:

"The overarching goal of the design is to “make the software recede into the background,” says Rosoff, emphasizing that “the content is the experience; there is no separation.” For example, the videos take up almost the entire screen when you’re viewing them, adding to the feeling that everything else has stopped and Khan is sitting in the same room as you, as your personal tutor."

I think it's very important that the design of materials for education has this quality. It's about the learning, not the tools.

A Wonderful Visual on How to Use SAMR Model On Different Classroom Tasks ~ Educational Technology and Mobile Learning

A Wonderful Visual on How to Use SAMR Model On Different Classroom Tasks ~ Educational Technology and Mobile Learning | Tools and apps for ELT | Scoop.it

"In this quick post I want to share with you this beautiful interactive image on the SAMR model. I learned about this resource from a tweet shared by our colleague David Fife. As you can see from the image below, iPadders provided examples of how to use each classroom task according to the different SAMR categories. And in each category, a set of apps and tools are provided to help you carry out the task under study. I invite you to have a look and share with your colleagues. Enjoy"

Via John Evans, Al Post, Matt Miller, Carla Arena
Richard Whiteside's insight:

Explains a lot about how digital tech can help, though on investigation this seems to be a model developed seemingly from nowhere without much academic work behind it. Example of a simple model stating the obvious? Does it matter that it's origins are hazy? Having had the chance to look into it and its creator, it's interesting to note how popular it is and how accepted it is, without much critique. Is it really that great a model?! Just wondering! Raises a lot of questions.

I've heard a lot about SMAR but never really taken the time to look into it. It might be time now that I'm looking at integrating more technology into my classroom. This model clearly supports technology and expects the use of it.
