Free Technology for Teachers: Read Write Think Timeline - A Timeline Tool for Almost All Devices

Free Technology for Teachers: Read Write Think Timeline - A Timeline Tool for Almost All Devices | Tools and apps for ELT | Scoop.it

"Read Write Think offers a bunch of great web, iOS, and Android applications for students. One of those that I recently learned about from David Kapuler is Read Write Think's Timeline creator. RWT Timline is available as a web app (Flash required), as an Android app, and as an iPad app. All three versions make it easy for students to create timelines for any series of events."

Via John Evans
Richard Whiteside's insight:

This could be nice to plan or summarise a story, for reading or listening comprehension with students. Or for reviewing the stages of a task, or process (perhaps a process, for passive grammar). In teacher training it could be an option for self-observation, reviewing the stages of a lesson and how it went.

With this Timeline tool, students could create timelines of the plot of a story they've read. Or they could use it to plan the plot line of a story they're planning to write.

Selected Web 2.0 presentation tools

Richard Whiteside's insight:

Not so much a 'Quick Guide' as an in depth guide, really! Looks of detailed explanation and screenshots giving a solid overview of a whole host of tools. Much more useful than a list as you can read and look and get a clear idea of what the tool is and how it might be used.

Top Tools for Learning 2013

Top Tools for Learning 2013 | Tools and apps for ELT | Scoop.it

Here are the Top 100 Tools for Learning 2013 –  the results of the 7th Annual Learning Tools Survey. The list was compiled by Jane Hart from the votes of 500+ learning professionals from 48 countries worldwide.

“A learning tool is a tool for your own personal or professional learning or one you use for teaching or training.”

Richard Whiteside's insight:

I normally wouldn't share such a big list, but this one is pretty definitive. More for engaging in professional development than using with language learners, but then I suppose that depends on your context and your learners. All these tools are useful to know about for one reason or another.

How Khan Academy is using design to pave the way for the future of education

How Khan Academy is using design to pave the way for the future of education | Tools and apps for ELT | Scoop.it
The design team at Khan Academy is helping lay the foundation for a revolution in education.
Richard Whiteside's insight:

I like this quote:

"The overarching goal of the design is to “make the software recede into the background,” says Rosoff, emphasizing that “the content is the experience; there is no separation.” For example, the videos take up almost the entire screen when you’re viewing them, adding to the feeling that everything else has stopped and Khan is sitting in the same room as you, as your personal tutor."

I think it's very important that the design of materials for education has this quality. It's about the learning, not the tools.

Alison Rostetter's curator insight, February 21, 12:54 PM

I'm always on the lookout for a good, easy-to-use video/animation maker as 'home-made' videos often inject some life into grammar and, when you learn something with pictures, I think it makes the learning more memorable.

36 Core Teacher Apps For Inquiry Learning With iPads - TeachThought

36 Core Teacher Apps For Inquiry Learning With iPads - TeachThought | Tools and apps for ELT | Scoop.it

"The interest in inquiry-based learning seems to ebb and flow based on–well, it’s not clear why it ever ebbs.

In short, it is a student-centered, Constructivist approach to learning that requires critical thinking, and benefits from technology, collaboration, resourcefulness, and other modern learning skills that never seem to fall out of favor themselves.

Regardless, St Oliver Plunkett Primary School has put together two very useful images that can help you populate your iPad–or classroom of iPads–with apps that support both inquiry-based learning (the second image below), and a more general approach to pedagogy based on Apple’s uber-popular tablet (the top image)."
