Phraseum - build and share phrasebooks online

Phraseum - build and share phrasebooks online | Tools4English | Scoop.it

The Web offers huge opportunities to improve any foreign language you’re learning, from news stories, blog posts, comments and all that content. So, find sites with your favourite topics and read them regularly. Phraseum will help you save and organize all useful sentences you come across while reading, in order to learn them later.

Via Nik Peachey
Amadeu Marin's insight:

Excellent idea! A fantastic tool to build up a collection of useful chunks or phrases around topics, situations, etc.

LEARNING TIP:

Phraseum provides what they call a 'clipping button' that you

drag onto your browser bookmark bar. Then, while you're reading online, you can highlight a piece of text (collocations, chunks, idioms, etc.) you want to clip, then hit the Phraseum clipping button to save and categorize the phrase into your account to learn or use later.

You can also share the phrases and phrasebooks you create and subscribe to other people's.

Readlang - Read, translate and supercharge your vocabulary

Readlang - Read, translate and supercharge your vocabulary | Tools4English | Scoop.it
Read your favorite webpages, translate the words you don't know, and we'll generate flashcards to help you remember.
Amadeu Marin's insight:

This is the best site I've found for developing your  vocabulary.

LEARNING TIPS

There are several good points here:

1) YOU choose the texts you want to work on and import them into Readlang.
2) As you are reading, you can click on one OR SEVERAL WORDS to read a translation --other similar services work only on individual words.
3) The words and phrases (chunks) you select for translation are stored into your account and turned into vocabulary flashcards that you can use for revision.
4) You can also work on YouTube videos.
5) It works on web browsers and also on mobile devices.

Here is a short introductory video: http://tinyurl.com/m3zlrym
This one explains more: http://tinyurl.com/q4un5qx

These make Readlang a powerful tool to use if you're really serious about expanding your vocabulary.

Quick Reads

Quick Reads | Tools4English | Scoop.it

This is a campaign sponsored by the UK government to promote reading among adult people who are not used to it. The books are written by well-known, successful authors like Kate Mosse or Ian Rankin, so they're 'real' books; only, they're about 100 pages and are written in a simpler style. You can order them from well-established online shops like amazon.co.uk or get them as e-books from the same sources. They're really cheap too, usually 1 pound! Found out more on the website.

Amadeu Marin's insight:

I think these books can become a good starting point for you to establish the habit of reading in English regularly, which, needless to say, is something that will do wonders for your understanding of the language and will in time show in your English.

LEARNING TIP

I encourage you browse through the titles, pick up one, read it and write a post here telling us about your experience. If you want, you could even organise a sort of book swapping or sharing club. Get reading!

WordReference.com - online dictionary

WordReference.com - online dictionary | Tools4English | Scoop.it
Free online dictionaries - Spanish, French, Italian, German and more. Conjugations, audio pronunciations and forums for your questions.
Amadeu Marin's insight:

Wordreference is the most popular online dictionary.

LEARNING TIP

If you study English, I recommend using the 'English Definitions' version, as this gives you a number of interesting possibilities, like searching for images, finding the words used 'in context' on the web, 'English synonymys', and you can always click on 'Spanish dictionary' to look at translations. Using these different possibilities will give you a deeper understanding of the words you're looking up.

ozdic.com - Oxford Collocation Dictionary Online for Advanced English Learners

ozdic.com - Oxford Collocation Dictionary Online for Advanced English Learners
Amadeu Marin's insight:

This is a very useful online dictionary, especially for when you're writing. 'Collocation' is a very simple, but powerful concept: words that often go together. You need to learn those words combinations if you want to write good texts, otherwise your choice of words can sound funny, weird.

LEARNING TIP

For example, type the word 'party' (noun) and see what verbs can be used before it.

Spell Up. Speak to play and build up your English.

Spell Up. Speak to play and build up your English. | Tools4English | Scoop.it

This is a great new game from Google which helps students develop their vocabulary through spelling and pronunciation. Using Chrome, students can actually speak to the computer and listen to the pronunciation of the words as they build a word tower. They can even listen to a speaking dictionary telling them what the words mean. This should get your students working autonomously to develop their own vocabulary and if they sign in they can track and share their results.

Via Nik Peachey
Amadeu Marin's insight:

This is a spelling and pronunciation game by Google which can be fun to play (not for too long, though...). It's got all the ingredients of digital games, like you score points, win medals, go up to more demanding levels, etc.

LEARNING TIP

It works better with chrome and you need a microphone an speakers or a headset. The tool makes you spell things using your voice, pronounce words, etc. If you play it regularly it could help improve those two tricky areas of English.

Give it a try!

Amadeu Marin's insight:

This is an excellent site to start reading the news and build up your vocabulary. When you register you're given a vocabulary test that determines your level. Next, the system searches the internet and offers you a number of current news articles that contain vocabulary at your level. The most difficult words are highlighted and you can read a translation in your language of choice, and you also get sentences from other articles that contain the same words. You're also offered a vocabulary exercise based on those words.

LEARNING TIP

You can select articles about world, business, entertainment, sport or science, and the system keeps a record of the texts you've worked on and the words you've learnt. Great! Read on!
