textivate.com

textivate.com | tools for teaching and learning English | Scoop.it

Big thanks to Rolf who sent me the link to this website. I'm a big fan of tools that don't require registration and are free and easy to use. Textivate ticks all the boxes. It allows you to automatically generate a range of interactive browser-based activities based on any text of up to 500 words. Simply type or paste a text into the box and click 'textivate now' button to see the available exercises (gapfills / sentence arrange / paragraph arrange / punctuation / splitting words). Great for exam classes or any other reading-based lessons.

Visuals for Foreign Language Instruction

Visuals for Foreign Language Instruction | tools for teaching and learning English | Scoop.it

The title says it all.

This site contains hundreds of visual aids (illustrations) that can be used to support instructional tasks such as describing objects and people (i.e., teaching vocabulary) or describing entire events and situations (i.e., teaching grammar). You can also use it to make your  worksheets look more interesting, especially when Google Images fails to provide you with appropriate image.

1000 images on the tip of my tongue - trilingual directory to learn idioms

1000 images on the tip of my tongue - trilingual directory to learn idioms | tools for teaching and learning English | Scoop.it

Understanding and using idioms in a foreign language helps us to communicate in a more realistic way. However, this is a difficult aspect of language learning since they differ a lot from language to language. The website 1000 images on the tip of my tongue will be a great for all those who want to learn to use idiomatic expressions. It includes idiomatic expressions in three languages (Spanish, English and French) illustrated with pictures, audio to learn to pronounce them and games to practice.

TED-Ed | Lessons Worth Sharing

TED-Ed | Lessons Worth Sharing | tools for teaching and learning English | Scoop.it

I love TED so I'm very excited about TED-Ed which seems to finally make the idea of 'flipped classroom' simple and accessible to everyone. There isn't much TEFL-relevant content on it yet, but the website has great potential. It allows you to use TED-Ed videos to create customized lessons. You can use, tweak, or completely redo any lesson featured on TED-Ed, or create lessons from scratch based on any video from YouTube. Take the tour to find out more about the details.

Wordle has been around for ages and you can find lots of websites that give you ideas how to use it (for example http://goo.gl/2TnGL) What I like about it is that it's so easy to use - copy & paste a text, click 'create' and ta-daaa! - a great visual including your keywords or target vocabulary is ready. Print/save/share friendly, no registration needed.

Socrative | Student Response System

Socrative | Student Response System | tools for teaching and learning English | Scoop.it

Socrative is a brilliant app that works like a Smart Response system. Teachers create a quiz (T/F or multiple choice) and students use their devices (smartphones, tablets, laptops) to submit answers individually, in pairs or in groups. Students don't need to create an account. Teachers don't need to use a smartphone (a computer will do). It's also very simple to set up. I always thought m-learning is something students do outside the class on their own but now I see I was wrong.
