Nik's QuickShout: Downloading Online video | Tools for Learners | Scoop.it

iDesktop.tv provides a really useful and user friendly service for anyone who wants to use video clips from sources like YouTube, but doesn't want their students looking around at anything unsuitable, or for anyone who has ever found a really useful clip, only to go back later and find it has moved or been removed.

Nik Peachey's insight:

This is a great tool for searching multiple video sharing sites and for downloading videos in various file formats.

Teresa Gibbons's curator insight, June 6, 10:23 AM

A quick clip can do wonders, but there is often the worry that something inappropriate will pop up as well. This certainly fills a need. Excellent.

Jennifer Turner's curator insight, June 6, 9:58 PM

The Case for Preserving the Pleasure of Deep Reading | MindShift

The Case for Preserving the Pleasure of Deep Reading | MindShift | Tools for Learners | Scoop.it

The deep reader, protected from distractions and attuned to the nuances of language, enters a state that psychologist Victor Nell, in a study of the psychology of pleasure reading, likens to a hypnotic trance. Nell found that when readers are enjoying the experience the most, the pace of their reading actually slows. The combination of fast, fluent decoding of words and slow, unhurried progress on the page gives deep readers time to enrich their reading with reflection, analysis, and their own memories and opinions. It gives them time to establish an intimate relationship with the author, the two of them engaged in an extended and ardent conversation like people falling in love.

Nik Peachey's insight:

An interesting read, but I'm not o sure that deeper reading is under threat. I know my own digital native daughter is more than capable of prolonged concentration on a text if she finds it sufficiently engaging.

Mark W.F. Condon's comment, June 4, 1:11 PM
Love the topic! I have begun, slowly, working on a blog regarding Avid Reading, which IS under threat as all focus in schools is on developing kids who read while ignoring that they must choose to do so for the rest of their lives. We have fewer and fewer children who choose to read, which means their broad reachiing education will stop with the diploma or degree. So thanks for sharing. I'd love the citation for the study that is mentioned here.
Mark W.F. Condon's comment, June 4, 1:13 PM

Steve Ridout's comment, June 4, 5:06 AM
Hey, Steve here, creator of Readlang. Very happy to see it shared here! It is already somewhat mobile friendly, in that the design adapts to smaller screens, and I use it on my iPad all the time. I hope eventually to develop iOS and Android applications too.
Patricia Daniels's curator insight, June 4, 9:35 AM

Students, I've just tested this myself and it's a useful tool. Apparently it's also becoming more mobile compatible, which will be a postive development. There's an introduction video so watch it first and see if it's a tool that you'll put to use. I've added the extension to Chrome.

You can upload webpages for reading and if you're unsure of a word, click on it for the translation. This will appear in your word bank as a flashcard with some text ( this provides you with the context which is an intelligent feature). You can then run through your list of flashcards and learn the words. Remember to put them in context when you are doing your practice as this will help you retain them.

Try it for yourself.
