How Local Papers Could Out-Maneuver ‘Ubers’ in the Digital Space | Street Fight

How Local Papers Could Out-Maneuver ‘Ubers’ in the Digital Space | Street Fight | Tools for journalists | Scoop.it

Are local newspapers erecting paywalls on a foundation of sand?

As most papers have converted to digital subscriptions, they have baked the fees – on average about $10 monthly – into what print subscribers pay for their print subs. That means that virtually every print subscriber becomes a digital subscriber by doing nothing more than choosing “all access” for free.

David Sallinen (WAN-IFRA)'s insight:

I would go further and propose that papers convert their “subscribers” into “members” who get special treatment with a digital page called “Rapid City Central” (or “Yellow Brick Central” or whatever the community’s name is). Rapid City Central would serve up, every day, something new and noteworthy that makes the community a better place to live and work, or not, based on reliable data and community feedback.

How Freelancers Make Money and Tell Stories With Snapchat | Tools for journalists | Scoop.it
When the announcement came late last year that Instagram was now bigger than Twitter, as reported by CNBC, those who once scoffed at the photo-focused network started jumping on board. But as usual, there’s already another up-and-comer ready to take the spotlight: Snapchat.
David Sallinen (WAN-IFRA)'s insight:

“I’ve seen [Snapchat] drive views to my website, drive higher engagement on Instagram, and increase brand equity,” he explained. He also believes the network has allowed him to connect on a more personal level and build more personal relationships—as well as have the undivided attention of his followers.

Using Data Journalism to Generate Content Ideas

Using Data Journalism to Generate Content Ideas | Tools for journalists | Scoop.it
Strictly speaking, data journalism is about telling stories with numbers. But let’s use a wider definition in this article, as for me the data used to tell a story can take many faces, including mere facts (historical, biographical, geographical) and different multimedia supports (interviews, photo reports, video footages). The idea here is to give you a broad view of what data journalism is and how you can use its lens to get great content ideas.

Internal chat apps: how to save time and increase collaboration

Internal chat apps: how to save time and increase collaboration | Tools for journalists | Scoop.it
Gawker editor-in-chief Max Read recently announced all of the internal chat discussion going on would be published externally on a new “Disputations” vertical with the idea being audiences would get extra value out of those discussions. That’s a step most publishers wont quite be willing to take, but it does point to the fact that more and more teams are finding more efficient ways to communicate – something becoming increasingly important in an age where the traditional journalist/advertising/development walls in many organisations are being broken down.

“Nieman Journalism Lab at Harvard A new report looks for lessons in successful (and unsuccessful) Knight News ... Nieman Journalism Lab at Harvard Some have grown into successful, widely used tools; others have disappeared with barely a trace.”
David Sallinen (WAN-IFRA)'s insight:
One of the original requirements of the News Challenge was that all projects open up any code or other resources they develop. The idea being that the money invested in Knight would help not just the grantees, but potentially a wider community of developers.
