E-learning in the development sector should be grounded in social constructivism - DynaMind eLearning

E-learning in the development sector should be grounded in social constructivism - DynaMind eLearning | Tools for (e)Learning | Scoop.it
There is very little need for straight-forward compliance training in the development sector. We should use the approach of social constructivism instead.
Lina Heaster-Ekholm's insight:

Just came across this wonderful (wonderful if you're into learning, e-learning, & international development!) blog by Anouk. In this post, she addresses one of the the conundrums I wrestle with: how to shape e-learning so that it truly utilizes social, constructivist principles and builds deep learning. This means doing so much more, as she points out, than tagging a discussion forum on to the end of a lesson. Can't wait to read more by her.

Michael Trucano, a recognized expert on deploying ICT in education, recently blogged about Worst practice in ICT use in education: Share Here's a list of some
Lina Heaster-Ekholm's insight:

An incredibly important read for anyone involved in international development, education, and technology. Although it's 5 years old, the practices the author cites are still bad and still happen far too often -- not only in ICT4D (information  & communication technology for development) but in the rolling out ICT programs in almost any context.

A Quick, No-Nonsense Guide to Basic Instructional Design Theory

A Quick, No-Nonsense Guide to Basic Instructional Design Theory | Tools for (e)Learning | Scoop.it

"Of the many eLearning theories that influence the practice, three of them are used by professionals on a daily basis...Practice and theory actually goes hand in hand. This is true not only in instructional design but in any other field or discipline. Theory, far from crippling your practice, will actually help you improve the quality of your eLearning material. While a learning theory won't answer all of your design problems, it offers clarity throughout your process and directs you toward finding solutions."

Learn more about three learning theories of instructional design in this post:

* Constructivism

* Cognitivism

* Behaviorism

Why? Each theory looks at "HOW" students learn. Understanding the theories helps you design activities that will help learners move forward in their learning process.

The infographic provides a definition for each of the theories and then provides ideas on what each theory helps the learner practice.

As with most infographics from SHIFT's eLearning Blog, this post also provides additional information on each of the three theories as well as links to additional resources.

Explore this post to better understand why these theories are important to all teachers, in online learning, blended learning and face2face situation.

Participation rates in online discussion forums or boards are often problematic. A few instructional design tips will turn them around.
Lina Heaster-Ekholm's insight:

Having just completed a fully online master's program where almost every single week of every single course had the "post once, reply twice" requirement, I know first-hand what the author is referencing here. Some threads were engaging and thought-provoking, but by the time 25 of us had posted the material could seem, well, less so... I wonder if it would have been possible to incorporate a problem-solving style approach like the one Anouk recommends, and what that experience would have been like?

Digital Principles

Digital Principles | Tools for (e)Learning | Scoop.it
These Principles find their roots in the efforts of individuals, development organizations, and donors alike who have called for a more concerted effort by donors and implementing partners to institutionalize lessons learned in the use of information and communication technologies (ICTs) in development projects. They were written by and for international development donors and their implementing partners, but are freely available for use by all. The Principles are intended to serve as guidance rather than edict, and to be updated and refined over time.
Lina Heaster-Ekholm's insight:

On the flip side of the 10 Worst Practices in ICT for Education are these Principles for Digital Development:

1. Design with the User
2. Understand the Existing Ecosystem
3. Design for Scale
4. Build for Sustainability
5. Be Data Driven
6. Use Open Standards, Open Data, Open Source, and Open Innovation

7. Reuse and Improve
8. Address Privacy & Security
9. Be Collaborative

Lina Heaster-Ekholm's insight:

Excellent article highlighting cultural nuances inevitably embedded in learning objects. The author provides practical ideas for addressing “cultural accessibility” shortcomings through translation, localization, modularization (XCLOs), and origination.

“However, e-learning courses are cultural artifacts, embedded with the cultural values, preferences, characteristics, and nuances of the culture that designed them, and inherently creating challenges for learners from other cultures. These differences range from the obvious, such as language, to more hidden differences, such as learning styles, values, and religious influences.”
