Indispensable iPad Apps for Teachers Professional Development ~ Educational Technology and Mobile Learning

Indispensable iPad Apps for Teachers Professional Development ~ Educational Technology and Mobile Learning | Toolkit for integration | Scoop.it

"The concept of teacher professional development has radically changed due to the boom in digital technologies and social media websites. The web now is replete with a variety of professional learning networks and communities of practice on almost any topic you think of. There is also another type of portals that have seen the light recently and which offer massive courses and trainings on different subjects, these are MOOCs. MOOCs are a great way for growing professionally particularly that most of the courses they offer are free. I have already featured some interesting MOOC resources that teachers can use for the enhancement of their PD and today I want to share with you some wonderful iPad apps that will allow you to pursue your PD on the go."

My Paperless Classoom: Coding with Kindergartners

My Paperless Classoom: Coding with Kindergartners | Toolkit for integration | Scoop.it
I was working with a kindergartner during coding club and I asked her to find the block that ended with the word "up." Now in my defense, I thought it was a likely sight word and chances were pretty good she knew it. She was incredulous, "I can't read!" So here was my challenge, can you teach programming to students who do not yet read? Of course, I look beyond this challenge and see the next: Can you use programming to support and deliver literacy instruction?

Bloom wrote his stuff in 1956. This is just a pretty picture of some old ideas. It doesn't even capture all the dimensions Bloom was talking about. It seems to me this is just a way of using technology to push old ideas about what learning and knowing is.
John Evans's comment, May 29, 2014 9:34 PM
Alan check the far left edge of the image. It does address the Revised Bloom's Taxonomy as outlined by Krathwohl http://www.unco.edu/cetl/sir/stating_outcome/documents/Krathwohl.pdf
Alan Ovens's comment, May 30, 2014 4:58 AM
Hi John. I appreciate the link and have looked at the articles. The point remains that the revision still represents an old way of thinking about learning and only concentrates on the cognitive domain. The first article does not appear to explain why the revision only deals with vol one of Blooms Taxonomy. What about the affective and psychomotor domains? I am curious why people keep pushing the overly cognitivist notion of this taxonomy when iPads (and more modern learning theories) give us a way of thinking about learning in enactivist and embodied ways. I think it is generally accepted that the cognitivist view of learning is fairly outdated. Mobile technologies and digital learning should be informed by more contemporary theory. I would be interested go hear your thoughts and anyone's else who wants to respond.

Joe Pereira's curator insight, June 2, 2014 8:44 AM

A nice little article with a few good game suggestions to use in the classroom, although it is extremely disappointing not see any paser-based IF mentioned when they've included 'Gone Home' and 'Myst', described as a 'first-person puzzle game'. Both these games are a direct graphical evolution of the standard text adventure. One thing I don't like in the article though, is the author's decision to discuss both the topics of Digital Game-based learning and Gamification. I don't think Gamification should be discussed at all with educators, when real video games can be used for learning, instead of game-like concepts.
