This is a very poignant documentary that was narrated by Bill Cosby back in 1968. The film is about Black identity and pride and how they have been compromised due to omissions in history books as well as Hollywood's depiction of Black America. Both of these problems essentially boil down to a disdain for Black culture and identity. This film came out in the 1960s when Black Americans were no longer accepting that they were second best--a very positive step in our society. I first saw this film when I was in middle school back in the late 1970s. Sadly, our teacher tried showing it to us because the film had many wonderful lessons but what I remembered most about the film is how the White students laughed at the images of Blacks in films, such as from BIRTH OF A NATION or the antics of Steppin Fetchit. Now, thirty years later I was able to get my own copy of this documentary--no small feat considering how obscure it now is. I was very impressed by this film and liked the overall message. Bill Cosby is a reasonable man but it's also nice to see that at times, he's angry as he talks about the de-humanization of Black men and women in films--with "Aunt Jemima" images, the myth of the "happy slave" as well as the "slow-witted Negro". All this is very poignant and can't help but make his point. If anything, this documentary actually was somewhat gentle in its condemnation of these films--and made no mention of the worst offenders, cartoons (such as the horrible COAL BLACK AND DE SEBBEN Dwarfs). Also seen in the film is some of the counter-reaction to these images in the Black community--such as a school intended to "brain-wash Black kids" (Cosby's words) so they won't buy into the lies that make a Black man any less of a man. Sadly, however, this film was made in 1968 and there is so much to the Black Power movement and the 1970s that couldn't have been covered. In fact, there's so much from the 80s and 90s and today that couldn't be covered. This film is aching to be remade by Cosby, as racism is seen in different forms today and there are still unnecessary divisions in our country that need to be identified and addressed. He's a very, very smart and talented man and I would love to see his take today on what's going on right and wrong between Black and White America. "Jon Miller of News Corp may have predicted 2012 will see the "channelisation" of the web, but he really means a renewed focus on curation..." "Channelisation implies that media corporations such as News Corp will be the ones controlling the playlist of content, but 2012 will see the role of such organisations fall back to providing content for others to turn into a wealth of different “channels” where the barrier to entry essentially falls to zero." Key highlights curated from the article: Curation of niche interest: channelisation "...opening up of video on demand services from all these channels will allow much smaller organisations to provide cross-channel curation. If the channels who provide the content are still showing their ads before, during and after each show, then curators could start channels focusing on more specific interests and smaller niches than a broadcast channel could do – there will be channels dedicated to crime shows, medical shows, shows with appearances from certain actors, and more. A user will just have to think of a single genre or idea that they want to watch in a show, and there will be a “channel” or that." The curator "More interesting than the drive to smaller and smaller niches, which could, at least in part, be algorithmically generated – will be the focus on the curator. If a user trusts the taste of a journalist, presenter, blogger or other figure – they may be more interested to watch the content that user picks than the content programmed for any particular channel. ...These curators could add to the content by providing commentary from their own knowledge of the content – offering a place where consumers could find a new love." Social Curation "...Equally, groups of curators could join together to offer more regular programming than the one-off playlists of individuals, basically creating “channels” without any of the budget and monetary constraints of a real channel. They would not have to pay for licensing as the content owners will bundle ads with the in-stream content, and so people will curate out of love and interest rather than having to focus on budgetary constraints." Will Patent Lawsuit Force Facebook To Acquire Yahoo? By suing Facebook for patent infringement, Yahoo is either seeking a cash settlement or some form of equity in pre-IPO Facebook, as it did in Google by way of the AltaVista patents it inherited when it bought Overture (who’d acquired AltaVista). Seeing how Microsoft's $45 billion offer is a thing of the past, and Yahoo revenues have fallen from $7 billion to $5 billion from 2008 to 2011, maybe new CEO Scott Thompson’s lawsuit is a veiled attempt to force Facebook to ultimately buy Yahoo. If anybody fears Facebook these days, it’s Google. Theoretically, Google may be inclined to acquire Yahoo now that Yahoo’s Facebook-killing patent arsenal is out in the open. Mind you, antitrust issues over the combined entity’s search market share would squash that deal. Welcome to another New Year! While everyone else is busy thinking about or already breaking their New Year resolutions, it’s time for us to take a moment to rethink what it is we can really do better now and over the next 12 months. I’m sure you heard it everywhere last year. Experts found the highest blog mountains and social network skyscrapers to Tweet in concert, “You need a Facebook brand page! Why are you not on Twitter yet? Have you checked-in on Foursquare? Hurry up and get set up on Google+. If you don’t get on social media, you’re going to go out of business!” And, here you are…still in business, I presume. But like any keen business leader or entrepreneur, you’re avidly thinking about your next move and your social media strategies for 2012. You already know that running the show in a mode of “business as usual” is not only limiting, it’s terribly complacent. But if you are to change, you need to better understand exactly how technology is influencing the behavior of your customers and why. The truth is that you can create your company brand pages on every social network you can imagine and you won’t succeed unless you know whom you’re trying to reach and where, what it is they expect and value, and how these channels represent a meaningful opportunity for you and your consumers to connect. You first must answer what’s in it for them and what’s in it for you.
Barack Obama asked for the authority, held by presidents between the Franklin Roosevelt and Ronald Reagan, to re-organize agencies of the executive branch. Specifically he wants to combine Commerce Department's trade and finance functions with the Small Business Administration; the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative; the Export-Import Bank; the Overseas Private Investment Corporation; and the Trade and Development Agency. In other words he wants to create one major agency that deals with promoting American business. It's great politics for several reasons. 1) Everyone believes that government agencies are a confused mess because it happens to be true. 2) Obama gets to talk like a business leader. He wants to cut through bureaucracy and rest-tape, and make government more consumer-friendly. 3) It undercuts his image as a big-government liberal and blocks Romney (or any Republican) from getting a perfect campaign contrast. Obama can simply say, "I've asked Republicans to give me the authority to slim down government and make it more efficient." A Republican presidential candidate would have a hard time arguing against a plan like this. At the same time, republicans don't want to give Obama easy victories either. Of course, there may be many reasons why this could turn out to be bad policy. The Export-Import bank guarantees loans to foreign buyers of American goods like Boeing's Airplanes. Why should it be combined with parts of the Small Business Administration. Doesn't this set up a situation where small businesses are competing for the same government resources as giant exporters like Boeing? We'll keep exploring this re-organization as details become available. In our recent outreach to the Imperial Valley in California, the organizers didn't just want us to come in for one speaking event. They wanted to impact their entire community from multiple angles with the Good News. Life Without Limbs wants to take this model, called Love Without Limits, all over the United States. Our Love Without Limits program will bring people together throughout a community. This kind of city-wide crusade will have an exponential effect. There is no end to what God can do when His people unite.
