Using Badges in Moodle

Using Badges in Moodle | tipsmoodle | Scoop.it
The Harvard Business Review named elearning badges as one of the most innovative trends to watch in 2013, and two years later, lms badge functionalities have only gotten better. A digital Moodle badge is essentially an online recognition of your achievements and skills. If a user has a number of certifications, for example, they can receive and display lms badges online to recognize their achievement or competency. Moodle badges can be given out based on a number of different achievements or criteria. With the ability to track a recipient’s communities of online interaction, a Moodle badge will show the work completed, and the outcomes learned to achieve said badge.

Moodle Badges are a great motivation and engagement tool to award students for their progress and hard work. It is a simple, yet effective way of accrediting learning. Moodle Badges motivate students who have received them to work hard to gain more, and they motivate other students to work hard to gain their own badges. Badges can be managed at either the course or site level.

Badges come in two varieties. First, there are site badges. These can be used across Moodle, and are offered for activities that are site-wide, such as completing a set of courses. Second there are course badges, which are awarded for activities within a specific course.

Students can view each other’s badges by going to the “Participants” tab on the Navigation bar, and clicking on the user’s course profile. Teachers can both add, and manage badges in their courses, as long as the administrator has enabled course badges in Administration>Site administration>Badges settings. Teachers can also add their own badges, with a title, issuer (i.e. teacher) detail, badge expiry date, and criteria for receiving the badge.

If you are managing your own Moodle badges, you can do so by going to Navigation>My profile>My badges. You can also view all available course badges at Navigation>Current course>Badges. You can see what badges other students in the course has, by going to Navigation>Participants, and clicking on the user’s profile.

4 Ways Moodle is Used for Nonprofit Organizations

4 Ways Moodle is Used for Nonprofit Organizations | tipsmoodle | Scoop.it

We all know that Moodle is a compatible LMS for education, healthcare, government, and corporate sectors, but not everyone is aware that Moodle is a great tool for nonprofit organizations as well. Here are 4 ways to use Moodle for nonprofit organizations.

* Moodle can be utilized by nonprofit organizations to host their website, and create online-based classrooms, which allows anywhere/anytime learning. This allows a social community to form. In Moodle, users can interact, engage in discussions, and even collaborate on work. Moodle allows course and user management, including course information, and student activities.

* Moodle's open source and cloud-based delivery makes it particularly useful for nonprofits. Nonprofit associations often have clientele and employees distributed across the map, so being able to access Moodle from any device that connects to the internet offers an effective training delivery method.

* An open source model also allows nonprofit organizations to be inclusive, meaning that it can be open to anyone regardless of their geographical location. Anyone working in a non-profit knows that a strong community is key, and Moodle allows a strong foundation. As you can imagine, opening the doors to such a large audience can mean a world of difference to a non-profit organization - more hands on deck means more productivity towards their cause.

* Moodle allows standardized curriculum and training. Consistency is essential in any organization, because it means that all members are on the same page, and there are no gaps in knowledge between members.

All of these outcomes of using Moodle work together to essentially bring awareness to your cause. By building a sense of community, your community in turn begins to develop your brand. Overall, Moodle gives you the tools you need to be efficient, and focused on your cause, and your people.

Gamify Moodle - Part 2 - Adding Dynamic Metrics

Gamify Moodle - Part 2 - Adding Dynamic Metrics | tipsmoodle | Scoop.it

This is the second part of our Gamify Moodle series, which is designed to help you gamify courses on the super-popular learning management system Moodle using Playlyfe.

In our first part, we scratched the surface of gamifying your courses on Moodle. We have already integrated Moodle with Playlyfe using blocks, so let's pick up from there.

As a course designer, you would want is to add gamification elements such as points, badges, levels, and rules to your courses. You'd also want only a few people to access this admin area. To do this, we will create a single block, shown only to teachers and course designers, which will allow them to create new badges and point metrics. And when they are designing courses or quizzes, they can decide the amount of points or types of badges the students will gain on completing those courses or quizzes.
