Curate Great Resources and Articles Into an eBook with Readlists

Curate Great Resources and Articles Into an eBook with Readlists | Tips, Tricks and Technology How To's | Scoop.it

Robin Good: Readlists is a simple web app which allows you to easily create curated lists of web resources, articles and links and bundle them to a downloadable eBook.

"A Readlist is a group of web pages—articles, recipes, course materials, anything—bundled into an e-book you can send to your Kindle, iPad, or iPhone."

To create a "Readlist" you simply click on the Create a Readlist button and add one url at a time. The system gently grabs metadata info like title and author and elegatly lays it out in an ebook formatted reading index ready to be published.

The service is free to use.

Video Curation: Auto-Create YouTube Video Playlists with Integrated Thumbnails

Video Curation: Auto-Create YouTube Video Playlists with Integrated Thumbnails | Tips, Tricks and Technology How To's | Scoop.it

Robin Good: YouTube has released new functionality that allows you to create an embeddable video playlist on any topic, or user ID while integrating thumbnails for all clips included.

Here is an example. Go to: http://www.youtube.com/embed/?listType=user_uploads&list=RobinGood&showinfo=1 and see an automatically created playlist of all my uploaded video clips.

And if you pass also the parameter, "showinfo=1", when creating the player, the list of video thumbnails will be permanently visible by clicking in the playlist icon appearing on the bottom right of the YouTube player.

If you want to embed such a playlist use this syntax:

**<iframe width="560" height="315"
src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/?listType=user_uploads&amp;list=RobinGood&amp;showinfo=1" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>***

and replace "RobinGood" with any YouTube user id.

Alternatively, replace listType=user with listType=search or listType=user_uploads to get specific terms searched and aggregated or to showcase all the uploads of a certain YouTube user.

Here is another example: http://www.youtube.com/embed/?listType=search&amp;list=news%20curation&amp;showinfo=1&nbsp;- here I have changed the listType to "search" and have used as query terms "news curation". Check the result.

Search Sites Like... Similarities Engines: A Map of Search Engines To Find Similar and Alternative Sites | Tips, Tricks and Technology How To's | Scoop.it

Robin Good: If you are curating a special collection on services and tools in a specific industry, you may appreciate being able to find out easily other companies and services that operate in the same niche.

While I would tipically search for popular keywords relevant to that niche to find all the relevant companies in that space, a much faster and effective approach is the one of using one of the several search engines designed just for this very task.

Yes, you have read me right. There are now more than a dozen of search engines dedicated to distill for you sites, services and companies that are most "similar" to the one you suggest.

For this reason I have put together a small reference map highlighting these specific search engines and linking to each one of them.

Full map: http://bit.ly/similarities-searchengines

Fashion Curation: Create Your Own Custom StyleBook with StyleSaint

Robin Good: StyleBook is a fashion and glamour curation platform allowing you to easily create rich illustrated stylebooks.

StyleBook looks on the surface like most other visual boards, allowing you to easily follow other users, and to select and repin images to your stylebooks.

From Techcrunch: "To use StyleSaint in its current form, log in with Facebook or Twitter and create an account, once logged on, you can choose from over 55K “tear sheet” images from which to create your own Stylebook, once you’ve got more than ten tear sheets loaded, you can hit the “Create Stylebooks” link in the top right and StyleSaint will automatically import, then publish, the last ten sheets you’ve torn. Alternatively you can drag-and-drop the tears to create a custom stylebook. Click on “Create” to publish to the site.

In addition the resulting books are Facebookable, tweetable and embeddable, the embeddable stylebooks function as an overlay on embedded sites, preventing traffic re-direction.

The most compelling thing about StyleSaint is that co-founders Brian Garrett and Allison Beal eventually want to use the collective data from the style booking activity to come up with its own line of clothing. “StyleSaint is the only company editorializing the phenomenon of image discovery and curation and combining it with a manufacturing, vertical eTailer ecommerce model...”

Build Your Custom TV News Channel With The Newslook iPad App

Build Your Custom TV News Channel With The Newslook iPad App | Tips, Tricks and Technology How To's | Scoop.it

Excerpted from the original article on GigaOM: "While video lovers have gotten more and more social services that serve up interesting clips from friends, it’s still not easy to construct a more comprehensive look at video news by topic. That’s the gap that New York state startup Newslook is trying to fill with a new iPad app that allows users to construct channels of their favorite news subjects on the fly.

Newslook is now getting even more into the consumer video space with its first iPad app. The app, which will debut at the paidContent 2012 conference Wednesday, allows users to build their own channel using video from more than 50 sources including the AP, Reuters, Bloomberg, National Geographic and others.

Newslook takes in hundreds of videos each day from its sources and applies a bunch of metadata to a smaller number of clips, putting them into various taxonomies that can be searched. Users who look for Barack Obama or The Hunger Games can pull up a stream of professional videos that are tied to the topic and can create an instant channel based on that topic.

Newslook adds more than 150 new videos a day that have been hand selected and tagged with metadata. In addition to search, there’s also tabs for finding top videos and clips that are trending and featured. Users who view one video can also see a list of relevant metadata terms to construct a similar channel. And they can share their videos on Facebook, with Twitter and Pinterest support coming later..."

4 Optimization Tips To Create a YouTube Traffic Jam | KISSmetrics

4 Optimization Tips To Create a YouTube Traffic Jam | KISSmetrics | Tips, Tricks and Technology How To's | Scoop.it

Excerpted from the article:

"Today we’ll explore four ways to optimize your YouTube channel to ensure your videos are being discovered, watched and shared.

1. Optimize Your Videos Metadata:

In terms of YouTube, the metadata makes up the title, descriptions and tags of your videos.

Optimizing these key sections of your video content will help rank your videos in both Google and YouTube.

- Write a concise, descriptive title using key phrases that people would search to find your video, but also incorporate YouTube’s Keyword Suggestion Tool.

- Each of your videos should have a lengthy description of what the video’s content is all about.

Always include a relevant URL to your website.

- Adding ten to twenty tags per video is an ideal way to make use of keywords relevant to your video but that couldn’t naturally fit in your title or description.

2. Use Descriptive Playlists:

There are a few benefits in using playlists to organize your video collections on YouTube when it comes to achieving greater visibility to your channel’s content.

- Begin grouping videos of a similar topic into playlists.

- Use keyword focused titles for your playlists.

- Write a keyword focused, accurate description for the playlist.

3. Make the Most of Annotations:

YouTube annotations are a way of adding interactive commentary to your videos. They act as a call to action on your content to help drive a viewer to complete a certain task, such as subscribing to your channel, watching more videos, pausing the video, adding a comment, following your brand on Twitter or Facebook and among many others.

There are six different types of annotations:

- The Speech Bubble...

- The Note...

- The Title...

- The Spotlight...

- The Label...

- The Pause...

4. Brand Your Page Consistently:

Branding is important no matter the marketing channel. Many features for branding your YouTube channel are free and should be taken full advantage of.

- Upload a Custom Background...

- Showcase Your Other Social Channels Everywhere...

- Custom Banners and Layout as a Brand Channel..."

In the article each element is analyzed with useful information and many examples.

Then an email follow up which states the following "The more of your friends sign up, the higher you jump in the waiting list queue"

You're welcome. Thanks for the credit/ linkback. If you run the Link Library plugin http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/link-library/ (which doesn't come with WordPress) you can also run a bookmarklet which lets you add new links in this same, quick way. Not everyone does much with the blogroll or links now. But I still use mine. Link Library also lets you set up your links like a web directory. Though you do have a lot of background work to do for setting it up. It may not be for anyone who wants something fast and easy. But, it is a free plugin and you could just use it for adding links.
Laura Brown's comment, April 24, 2012 2:03 PM
I don't know if any of the tutorials mention this...

Once you have your PressThis loaded on your bookmark bar you can right click it and select Properties. Then change the name the button shows to anything you like. This is great if you have more than one blog you want to send content to. It helps to know which blog is which.
Robin Good's comment, April 26, 2012 5:53 AM

SEO Guide to Video Hosting and Embedding | SEOmoz

SEO Guide to Video Hosting and Embedding | SEOmoz | Tips, Tricks and Technology How To's | Scoop.it

Excerpted from the article:

"How should I host my videos for SEO purposes? Is it better to use YouTube, Vimeo or third party hosting?

All hosting solutions have their own set of advantages and disadvantages:

Third party and self hosted:

-Easier to get video rich snippets for your own domain;

- Can customise video player;

- Can build links back to your domain through embeds.

YouTube & Vimeo:

- Gets the content in front of more eyes;

- Content will invariably rank well (albeit often not for your domain).

There are 3 major functions for video from an SEO perspective:

1) Ranking, traffic and conversions;

2) Brand impressions and notoriety;

3) Links.

Approach 1: Video for Ranking, Rich Snippets and Conversions

#Location

- Include the videos on a page targeting a term likely to receive a video rich snippet;

- Ensure your videos are being built into a page where there are a variety of other media types;

- Include only one video per page.

#Hosting

Either self host your videos, or use a paid secure hosting solution (options detailed at the end of this post).

#Embedding

- Ensure the content cannot be embedded outside of your own domain;

- Embed the content with HTML5 and JavaScript or Flash, but not an iframe.

#Video Sitemap

Submit a video XML sitemap to Google Webmaster tools.

Approach 2: Video for Links

#Location

As with all bits of link bait, put the content somewhere visible, with good internal linking structure.

#Hosting

- Self-host the content or use a third party solution;

- Allow the video to be embedded anywhere;

- Create a CNAME for your video files.

#Embedding

- Embed the content in HTML5 and JavaScript or Flash, but not an iframe;

- Include social share buttons next to the video player;

- Customise an iframe embed code for users to embed your content.

#Video Sitemap

Create and submit a video sitemap per the ranking, rich snippets and conversion model.

Approach 3: Video for Brand Impressions & Notoriety....(check out it for information about this)

Approach 4: Video for All of the Above....

Paid Hosting Package Analysis and Pros and Cons about:

- Wistia

- Vzaar

- Vimeo Pro

- Brightcove

Each element in this article is analyzed with many details. Moreover, there are many video's examples and also a presentation.
