10 Dead Simple Tips to Take Advantage of Google+ for SEO

10 Dead Simple Tips to Take Advantage of Google+ for SEO | Tips, Tricks and Technology How To's | Scoop.it

Excerpted from article on SEOmoz:

"It's no secret. When engineers built Google+, they constructed an SEO juggernaut to dominate search results above all other social platforms.

There are several ways to take advantage of this SEO domination for your own benefit.

1. Follow your profile links:

Google+ not only allows you to link to your other profiles across the web, but you can embed followed links directly into your bio with the anchor text of your choice.

2. Embed post links:

Like profile links, Google+ also allows you to insert followed links directly into your posts – as many as you want. Simply insert the full URL and Google will automatically format it as a link.

The value of these links increases the number of times the post is shared, linked to and +1’ed.

3. Optimize your G+ title tags:

The first sentence of your Google+ post becomes part of the title tag, which is highly correlated with rankings and greatly influences click-through rates. Choose your keywords carefully and consider that the first sentence will be the first thing most people see.

4. Unlimited editing power:

Google+ is just like your own mini personal blogging platform. This means you can fully edit any of your posts at any time. Not so with Facebook or Twitter.

5. Index new content lightning fast:

If you share new content on Google+, chances are that Google will index the page very quickly.

Rumor has it that new URLs are crawled almost instantly. This makes complete sense as part of the purpose of Google+ was to replace Twitter when creating Google's Realtime Search.

6. Stalk Connect with influencers:

Google+ lists 17 different notification triggers that can help you connect with influencers in your industry.

Depending on the individual's account settings, these notifications can take the form of an email, phone SMS, or the omnipresent red Google notification bar.

7. Optimize your author pic for more traffic:

If you successfully implement the author tag and have an eye-catching pic you can often grab free traffic away from even your competitor's #1 ranking.

8. Test drive a G+ social media dashboard:

Adam Singer created an awesome social media dashboard that you can use for free. At one glance you can view all your essential metrics from Google+ traffic and all other social networks including:

- On Site Social Actions, i.e. Google +1's;
- Revenue per Visit by Social Network;
- Overall Traffic Stats by Social Source.
Bonus: Install this dashboard for free in your Google Analytics account by clicking here:

http://www.google.com/analytics/web/permalink?uid=erNMqvwYQIWKDiA7dkHbJQ

9. Check your CircleRank:

My favorite new tool is CircleCount. Try it now by pasting in your Google+ URL to chart your daily follower growth, the virality of your posts, and even see your "CircleRank" score compared against all other Google+ profiles.

10. Be an awesome (Late) early adopter:

Even with it's explosive growth, only 1 in 4 people use Google+ once a month. The rest log in even less, although this number is growing fast..."

4 Google Analytics Features You Probably Haven’t Used

4 Google Analytics Features You Probably Haven’t Used | Tips, Tricks and Technology How To's | Scoop.it

Excerpted from article:

"Hidden in the nest of menus are 4 powerful features you might have overlooked.

1) Page Speed:

Google Analytics now allows you to see the average loading speed of individual pages on your site in the Page Timings report, which you can find on the Content menu.

The report shows you the average page load time, in seconds, which allows you to quickly pinpoint the offending pages that are getting a decent number of page views

2) In-Page Analytics:

Google is sunsetting their standalone Browser Size tool in favor of the In-Page Analytics report built into GA, which you can find in the Content section.

Click on the Browser Size button, next to Show color and under the metrics. You can navigate your site like you would normally do in a browser and the data will refresh.

3) The Network Report (aka Reverse IP Lookup):

They also record the Network of the visit, which you can find in the Audience section.

Most of the networks listed will be Internet service providers (ISPs), but you will also see company names for offices large enough.

4) Visualize with Motion Charts:

Consider the amount of traffic you receive from various channels, which you can see in the Traffic Sources report.

One powerful way to see which channels are driving visitors and their content consumption is the Motion Chart option, which you can activate by clicking on the bubble icon above the data..."

How to Use Facebook Apps to Improve Fan Engagement | Social Media Examiner

How to Use Facebook Apps to Improve Fan Engagement | Social Media Examiner | Tips, Tricks and Technology How To's | Scoop.it

Excerpted from article:

"Timeline presents brand-new challenges (and opportunities!) for staying top-of-mind.

Since page admins can no longer designate a default landing tab (also referred to as the “default welcome tab”), businesses need to get more creative and use custom apps to direct Facebook page visitors to take action.

One way to make up for the loss of engagement with a default landing tab is to drive visitors to your custom apps instead. Custom apps are prime real estate when optimized.

To get the most out of this real estate, you need to create a custom app strategy for your page.

Here’s a simple 3-step action plan to help you get momentum quickly with your new Timeline layout:

#1: Define Your Custom App Strategy:

Do you want to create lead generation opportunities? Or create a welcome page? Or perhaps you want to turn your app into a mini-storefront? There are endless strategies for your custom apps.

- Video within custom apps is a smart strategy to connect with your fans on a more personal level.

- Another custom app strategy is to use them to display your best content.

- Another useful strategy for custom apps is to create an e-commerce opportunity.

#2: Use a Third-Party Tool to Create Your Custom App:

The good news is that you have many third-party tool options. Some options are free, others charge a fee.

For some of my custom apps, I’ve used Lujure.

#3: Promote and Drive Traffic to Your Custom App:

To grab your fans’ attention, make sure to use strong calls to action in both the custom app name and the app thumbnail image. The thumbnail image specs are 111 x 74 pixels.

Quick Tip! Here’s a free tool (http://www.timelineimagetool.com/) that will help you create your custom app thumbnails without ever having to hire a designer...."

Fashion Curation: Create Your Own Custom StyleBook with StyleSaint

Robin Good: StyleBook is a fashion and glamour curation platform allowing you to easily create rich illustrated stylebooks.

StyleBook looks on the surface like most other visual boards, allowing you to easily follow other users, and to select and repin images to your stylebooks.

From Techcrunch: "To use StyleSaint in its current form, log in with Facebook or Twitter and create an account, once logged on, you can choose from over 55K “tear sheet” images from which to create your own Stylebook, once you’ve got more than ten tear sheets loaded, you can hit the “Create Stylebooks” link in the top right and StyleSaint will automatically import, then publish, the last ten sheets you’ve torn. Alternatively you can drag-and-drop the tears to create a custom stylebook. Click on “Create” to publish to the site.

In addition the resulting books are Facebookable, tweetable and embeddable, the embeddable stylebooks function as an overlay on embedded sites, preventing traffic re-direction.

The most compelling thing about StyleSaint is that co-founders Brian Garrett and Allison Beal eventually want to use the collective data from the style booking activity to come up with its own line of clothing. “StyleSaint is the only company editorializing the phenomenon of image discovery and curation and combining it with a manufacturing, vertical eTailer ecommerce model...”

Looks like a nice idea ... However, signing up for the beta with an email address is fine. Then they want you to spam your contacts before you even get a chance to see how it works.

Then an email follow up which states the following "The more of your friends sign up, the higher you jump in the waiting list queue"

#fail ... but thanks for sharing

New Free Tool That Shows Fans Reached On Facebook Page Posts: Minilytics By PageLever

New Free Tool That Shows Fans Reached On Facebook Page Posts: Minilytics By PageLever | Tips, Tricks and Technology How To's | Scoop.it

Excerpted from review article on TechCrunch:

"Pagelever, a popular Facebook analytics company, released a new, free tool called Minilytics today. The company claims it is the first tool that lets users measure how many fans see their posts on Facebook pages.

Two weeks ago Facebook released a new metric in the API that counts fan’s post-views.

Once the new metric was released, Pagelever co-founder Jeff Widman and his team built the free tool measuring how many fans see a Facebook post, as well as answering other questions for users, like when are the best times to post, best types of posts and “who are my fans.”

Widman says the tool lets users see which page views are from fans who have already “liked” the page, rather than combining fan views with those that come from viewers who land on the page but aren’t fans.

He notes that this data is particularly important for pages that are growing quickly or that have large numbers of targeted ads..."

Do you want more click throughs on your search listings?

Step #1: Write a full and seductive meta description

6 Link Building Tools to Boost Your Traffic

6 Link Building Tools to Boost Your Traffic | Tips, Tricks and Technology How To's | Scoop.it

Excerpted from article on Mashable:

"Link building is a concept that anyone involved in online marketing will come across and, more than likely, be involved in. The principle is simple — get high quality, relevant sites to link to your own. In doing so you not only generating traffic from visitors clicking through but also give search engines an indication as to the importance of your site.

Here are six of the most popular link-building tools:

1. Ontolo:

It is a powerful, sometimes complex, tool that can work wonders for someone who knows how to use it. For link prospecting it’s pretty much unparalleled but search phrases have to be pretty specific.

In other words, this is not for the beginner link builder. If anything it’s better suited for larger companies or seo agencies.

2. BuzzStream:

This tool allows you to create your own database of possible link-building sites, lets you assign them to a team member, and then offers options for touching base with site owners.

3. OpenSiteExplorer:

Rand Fishkin’s SEOMoz is a very well-known name in the SEO industry with a reputation for delivering high-quality, easy-to-use tools.

The program’s competitor analysis option gives you an easy way to look at and understand what competitors are doing to increase their rankings. This is done by giving you a list of metrics such as inbound links to a page or site, their anchor text, and ‘Domain Authority’.

4. Raven:

Raven’s suite of SEO tools covers everything from on-page analysis to social media monitoring and link building. The thing that stands out here is the sheer size and scope of the available options.

One of the perks of Raven is that it integrates with a number of external services.

5. Citation Labs:

As a link builder, one of the most time-consuming tasks is to find top quality sites that are both relevant and likely to link to you — something that Citation Labs makes far easier than any of the other tools that I’ve come across so far.

Simply choose the type of link or site that you’re looking for, enter a few relevant phrases, and wait for the software to generate your report.

6. Whitespark:

Showing up at the top of specific search results can be a life-changing event for a local business, which is where Whitespark is aiming to help. Their local citation tool offers an easy solution to finding potential link partners at a local level. Simply enter your location and type of business, fine-tune the search phrase, and that’s it. Just a few seconds later you’ll have a list of potential link targets.

Each tool is analyzed with more information. In addition, you can read Pros, Cons, Cost and Value for the Money. Read full article here:

How To Use Google Analytics To Identify And Fix Underperforming Landing Pages | SEOmoz

How To Use Google Analytics To Identify And Fix Underperforming Landing Pages | SEOmoz | Tips, Tricks and Technology How To's | Scoop.it

Excerpted from original article:

"When I’m looking for landing pages that are underperforming, some of the metrics that I take into account include:

- Bounce rate;
- Navigation summary;
- Conversion rates;

Before I talk more specifically about each of these metrics, I want to touch on the power of using filters in your web analytics. If you notice that similar pages have higher than average bounce rates, for example, you can use filters to test whether or not this trend is true across the whole page type.

***Bounce Rate:

You should look for individual pages with remarkably high bounce rates; high traffic means they are a good opportunity for improvement. Also look for running themes and think of some ideas on how to test those themes using filters as discussed above.

***Navigation Summary:

You might want to check out the navigation summary report for your key pages to see where users are going next:

- Go to Content > Site Content > All Pages.
- Click on the page name.
- Select Navigation Summary from the top of the report.
- Click (entrance) in the previous page path pane on the left so that we’re just looking at users who are landing there.

***Conversion Rate:

Conversions can be thrown into the mix here to give you the full picture; after all, even if a page has an incredibly low bounce rate, it might be worth nothing to you if it doesn’t ultimately convert.

You have to do a little more work in GA to view landing pages with conversions by setting up a custom report.

5 things that might be wrong with your landing pages:

1. Is the traffic source relevant to your business?

2. Is the traffic source relevant to that landing page?

3. Have you got show-stopping technical or usability problems?

4. Are you observing basic landing page principles?

5. Are you speaking your potential customers’ language?

What next?

- Make obvious improvements straight away...

- Testing new pages...

- Analysis and Iteration...

Each element is analyzed with full information and with some links as examples or tools to use. Read full article here:

Video Curation: Auto-Create YouTube Video Playlists with Integrated Thumbnails

Video Curation: Auto-Create YouTube Video Playlists with Integrated Thumbnails | Tips, Tricks and Technology How To's | Scoop.it

Robin Good: YouTube has released new functionality that allows you to create an embeddable video playlist on any topic, or user ID while integrating thumbnails for all clips included.

Here is an example. Go to: http://www.youtube.com/embed/?listType=user_uploads&list=RobinGood&showinfo=1 and see an automatically created playlist of all my uploaded video clips.

And if you pass also the parameter, "showinfo=1", when creating the player, the list of video thumbnails will be permanently visible by clicking in the playlist icon appearing on the bottom right of the YouTube player.

If you want to embed such a playlist use this syntax:

**<iframe width="560" height="315"
src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/?listType=user_uploads&amp;list=RobinGood&amp;showinfo=1" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>***

and replace "RobinGood" with any YouTube user id.

Alternatively, replace listType=user with listType=search or listType=user_uploads to get specific terms searched and aggregated or to showcase all the uploads of a certain YouTube user.

Here is another example: http://www.youtube.com/embed/?listType=search&amp;list=news%20curation&amp;showinfo=1&nbsp;- here I have changed the listType to "search" and have used as query terms "news curation". Check the result.
