This Video Game Helps Kids Deal With Mental Health Issues

This Video Game Helps Kids Deal With Mental Health Issues | Ed Tech | Scoop.it

gNats Island is designed to help adolescents overcome negative thoughts, anxiety, and depression. The graphic, character-based game is based on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.

On the "island," players "meet" the negative automatic thoughts in the form of pesky "gNats" that have a "nasty sting." The Black and White gNat makes you think in extremes. The Complete Disaster gNat makes you think everything is a complete disaster, and so on. Almost 750 therapists in the U.S., Ireland and the UK have been trained to use the game with their young patients.

Crystal Cherise Conley's insight:

Social and Emotional Issues are a huge topic in Middle School and this game is an interesting way of addressing it.  We know students love gaming.  I think it is brilliant.

We were just having a discussion today about vocabulary and the verbs necessary to consider when planning for Common Core.  This clearly shows how different Common Core is from state standards.

This is very interesting that Research is mentioned 87 times in the common core and critical thinking only gets 1!

Common Core can be a positive force for change.

Elizabeth Sky-McIlvain's comment, August 13, 2013 8:13 AM
There are several unsettling things here - would like to see it done again with the national CCSS - now there's a project! What bothers me? Low Creativity in ELA (no wonder so many admins are mandating information reading and writing). What? No Collaboration in math? Take the ELA writing test on the Computer but don't set a standard for its use. And heaven forbid anyone should be asked to Communicate in the process of Learning. There is a concordance app somewhere - think I'll find it.

Why Kids Must Be Taught Digital Manners Infographic

Why Kids Must Be Taught Digital Manners Infographic | Ed Tech | Scoop.it

Teaching students the importance of having and using manners is nothing new to teachers. However, what has changed is the type of etiquette kids needs today—namely, the digital kind. True, please, thank you and excuse me are still significant, but in addition to these basics, students growing up in this ever-connected, social media crazed world require much more. Concepts such as online privacy, sharing and creating a positive digital footprint through the demonstration of responsible online behaviors are just as vital.

Using Google Hangouts for Teacher Development

Using Google Hangouts for Teacher Development | Ed Tech | Scoop.it

" Our children live so far away that it was a no brainer to use Google Hangouts to video chat with all of them at the same time. It was quick, easy to connect, and it was a lot of fun. While I do not suggest that teachers spend too much time putting wigs and mustaches on each other during video chats, Google Hangouts is a perfect tool to increase the level of communication and professional development in every school."

[Infographic] Teacher's Love For Technology is Changing Classrooms

[Infographic] Teacher's Love For Technology is Changing Classrooms | Ed Tech | Scoop.it

"Gone are the days when teaching meant the traditional use of blackboard, chalk and pencils. Technology has a major role in the 21st century and schools are adopting it across the globe. While at one point in time, adopting technology into the classroom may have been perceived as stressful and forced for teachers and students alike, as it stands now, students aren’t just excited about using technology, teachers are excited and highly capable of utilizing its presence in the classroom. Technology is being seen as an aid to teaching by many teachers and they are enthusiastic about its use in education."
