A Soft-Materials 3D Printer from Carnegie Mellon and Disney

A Soft-Materials 3D Printer from Carnegie Mellon and Disney | Invent To Learn: Making, Tinkering, and Engineering in the Classroom | Scoop.it
When I think of 3D printing, I think of objects that are hard, made of plastic, metal, or some synthetic material. I imagine there will be a lot of soft products made with 3D printers, but I was curious how they might be made. Recently a new kind of printer produced by researchers at Carnegie Mellon University and Disney is printing soft things. Their printer turns woolen yarns into objects. The actual printer looks a lot like a sewing

Introducing MakerBot PrintShop, a fun, easy, and free tablet application for creating and 3D printing all kinds of cool things on MakerBot Replicator 3D Printers.
sylvia martinez's insight:

The headline is misleading. Yes it only prints on MakerBots. That's to be expected. It prints 3 specific things (with variations) - rings, bracelets, and text (like nameplates). It's not a "design" app.

Well, thankfully I never felt that way (as a girl), and I work hard to model  that computing is cool for all students. My Scratch Digital Animation class last school year was 50% female  (4th grade programmers, they are awesome!)  In fact, since I started teaching Scratch in 2008, there have  always been girls in my camps, but sometimes just a few :-(

When researchers asked young children to figure out an experiment using cause and effect, they did a much better job than young adults. That may be because their thinking is more flexible and fluid.

Iron Man and Other Brilliant Cardboard Sculptures by Kai-Xiang Xhong

Iron Man and Other Brilliant Cardboard Sculptures by Kai-Xiang Xhong | Invent To Learn: Making, Tinkering, and Engineering in the Classroom | Scoop.it
20-year-old Taiwanese student Kai-Xiang Xhong has the unique hobby of constructing astonishingly intricate and realistic works of art from cardboard. Recently, Xhong used the humble medium to build a life-size replication of Iron Man that looks every bit like the suit from the movies. Each detail is reproduced perfectly, right down to the glowing chest plate and arms. Between school and other activities, it took Xhong nearly a year to complete the cardboard sculpture, but the results are so impressive that even Tony Stark would be jealous.
Iron Man is only one of the latest of Xhong's brilliant cardboard creations. In his spare time, he constructs a variety of creatures that are equally as intricate and lifelike, from a miniature Optimus Prime to a glowing Godzilla to huge T-rex skulls. Although Xhong prefers to maintain the original texture and color of cardboard, he builds his sculptures as realistically as possible in every other aspect, patiently cutting and assembling each small…
