Making Thinking Happen

Making Thinking Happen | Tinkering and Innovating in Education | Scoop.it

"What does it mean to see the world like a designer? What is “maker thinking?” What kinds of thinking dispositions characterize a tinkerer? These are some of the questions at the heart of the Agency by Design project, a multi-year research and development initiative at Project Zero, a research organization at the Harvard Graduate School of Education.

Sponsored by the Abundance Foundation, the focus of this project is to investigate the teaching and learning of design thinking and maker thinking. The term design thinking is derived from the practical work of designers: It refers to a context-driven, human-centered problem solving process that emphasizes creative ideation, learning from failure, prototyping, and designing for real-world use. Maker thinking is related to the burgeoning maker movement and the do-it-yourself (DIY) mindset; it refers to a process of thinking-through-making that emphasizes tinkering, resourcefulness, and “hacking” (i.e., altering or repurposing), and celebrates a spirit of inventiveness and hands-on fun." from source: http://makingthinkinghappen.wordpress.com/

ghbrett's insight:

The "Agency by Design" project, a multi-year research and development initiative at Project Zero, a research organization at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, is a program that excites me. From what I have seen on this web site this group is opening eyes, hands, ears, minds, and more to new ways of transferring knowledge (aka: teaching or training) from point A to a person who is point B whether or not a student. Have a look at this blog to see some images that illustrate some of the varied approaches to "teaching" new content with different methods and media. This is a good site to keep up with.

Getting Stuff to Take Apart | The Tinkering Studio Blog | Exploratorium

Getting Stuff to Take Apart | The Tinkering Studio Blog | Exploratorium | Tinkering and Innovating in Education | Scoop.it

This week we are dissecting all kind of stuff in the Tinkering Studio with help from guest artist Todd McLellan, author of the amazing book, Things Come Apart. But before starting our weeks workshop, we needed to collect a bunch of old tools, electronics, and other household  objects.

... Urban Ore is an awesome community resource and they gave us a great deal once we told them that we were doing an educational program at the Exploratorium! Take Apart with Todd We loaded all of it up in the back of a car." - from source: http://blogs.exploratorium.edu/tinkering/2013/08/07/getting-stuff-to-take-apart/

ghbrett's insight:

Taking things apart without concequences like needing to put it back together and work is exciting. This post demonstrates how the Exploratorium has used this process as a workshop theme based on guest artist Todd McLellan's works. This is a great idea and can should be easy to do with the help of a local thrift shop.

Save the arts: 'Art education is vital for cognitive development'
The Express Tribune
To understand art, teachers should let children enjoy the process of learning and encourage them to use their imagination.
ghbrett's insight:

I have spent my actual career doing training, consulting, analysis, web app building, identifying the Next Killer App and related stuff for higher education research and education, along with K-12, Libraries, and Civic Networks. This was all done with a Fine Arts background. My Masters of Fine Arts (MFA) gave me a grounding in innovation, curiousity, analysis, creating solutions, sharing, communicating and taking constructive criticism, as well as other implicit and tacit skills that transfered to other disciplines. So Art is not just about painting or designing or sculpting. Art is an multi-tiered and multi-disciplinary activity that creates people who can be beneficial to many organizations for a variety of positions.
