Palm-sized Quadcopter, the flying development kit | GeekBoy.it | Tinkering and Innovating in Education | Scoop.it

"A Swedish company called Bitcraze may just of provided the tool to scratch my itch! A tiny quadcopter called the Crazyflie Nano, that fits into the palm of your hand and comes as a kit.

Designed with home assembly in mind, once ordered you must mount and solder the motors. Being open source, you can easily expand the capabilities of the quadcopter to include features like an on-board camera / microphone. It’s basically a flying development board. It has a Flight time up to 7 minutes with standard 170mAh Li-Po battery." from Source: http://geekboy.it

ghbrett's insight:

These tiny quadcopters are amazing. I have watched YouTube! videos of the mobility of these. A Dutch research group have programmed four to work together with a net to autonomously capture or toss a ball in the air. Note that this is also an Open Source kit! I want one -- someday!

"MaKey MaKey: Ever played Mario on Play-Doh or Piano on Bananas? Alligator clip the Internet to your world and start inventing the future. MaKey MaKey: An Invention Kit for Everyone

... "We believe that everyone is creative, inventive, and imaginative. We believe that everyone can create the future and change the world. So we have dedicated our lives to making easy-to-use invention kits. We believe that the whole world is a construction kit, if we choose to see it that way.

We are inspired by the Maker Movement. We want to help people start to think of themselves as Makers and agents of change. When you have the "Maker's Mindset," you know you can change the world."" from source: http://makeymakey.com/

ghbrett's insight:

Makey Makey can be compared to a 21rst century Erector Set. An Erector Set with nuts, bolts, steel strips in various shapes with holes in them allowed the builder to create amazing things. Makey Makey does the same with digital technology. You can build, create, design, prototype amazing things. Their web site shows how an eight year old girl invented and created a virtual piece of wood to be cut with a real knife. Or how about making a piano from bananas? Check it out!

Arduino

Arduino | Tinkering and Innovating in Education | Scoop.it

"If you have a friend or relative who has been asking “what’s an Arduino?” You can point them here. They’ll get an overview of what it is and what’s possible with it." from Source: http://blog.makezine.com/arduino/

"Arduino is a single-board microcontroller designed to make the process of using electronics in multidisciplinary projects more accessible. The hardware consists of a simple open source hardware board designed around an 8-bit Atmel AVR microcontroller, though a new model has been designed around a 32-bit Atmel ARM. The software consists of a standard programming language compiler and a boot loader that executes on the microcontroller.

Arduino boards can be purchased pre-assembled or do-it-yourself kits. Hardware design information is available for those who would like to assemble an Arduino by hand. There are sixteen official Arduinos that have been commercially produced to date. Numerous hardware variations of the Arduino are being sold by third parties." from Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arduino

ghbrett's insight:

The Makezine section on Arduino boards is loaded with projects and ideas for tinkering with. There is a beginner's video right on the front page to explain and show more about the board and how it can be used. Very exciting for students and people who want to tinker with technology or computing devices or controllers.
