I can remember spending almost a full period on one short paragraph while reading about endothermic and exothermic reactions in science class. We spent time highlighting, underlining, making connections to things we already knew, asking questions in the margins, defining words and more. The room might as well have smelled of smoke— these kids were thinking, brains-on-fire style! They were struggling…PRODUCTIVELY! I was hooked, and unbelievably, so were they. I heard several kids exclaim, “Ohhhhhhh, I get it.”
The new law allows guns in bars, churches nightclubs and libraries. It expands Georgia's Stand Your Ground law so that felons may invoke this defense. And it permits certain schoolteachers and administrators to carry firearms inside their schools.
This is a chronological list of school shootings in the United States.
Prior to 1989, there were only a handful of incidents in which two or more victims were killed by firearms at a school, including the 1966 University of Texas massacre, the 1974 Olean High School shooting, the 1976 California State University, Fullerton massacre, and the 1979 Cleveland Elementary School shooting (the 1927 Bath School disaster was a bombing, not a shooting, with a firearm used only to detonate explosives). School shootings prior to the late 1990s, when they received intensive press and official coverage, were considered local incidents and may be substantially underreported in current tabulations, raising questions as to whether school shootings are actually increasing or are simply receiving more attention in recent years. From 1989 to 2012, there have been at least 40 such incidents.
A teacher at a high school in California is praised by police for averting a serious shooting incident, by persuading a student to put down his gun.
Dr. Richard NeSmith's insight:
Gun advocates can say what they may...but were this student carrying one of the assault rifles (which are designed for no other reason than mass killing), this would have a very different outcome. Please consider outlawing "weapons of war." We, at least, owe our children that much.
Read more on Slate about gun control. Since the shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Conn., on Dec. 14, we at Slate have been wondering how many people are dying from guns in America every day.
The MoS columnist angered 90,000 gun-lovers in the US with his views on gun control. Here he explains why he may leave the country that has become his second home.
Dr. Richard NeSmith's insight:
As an American I become very annoyed with those who would rather ignore good advice from a non-American born "outsider," than to actually examine what they have to say. Our nation has been dumbed-down for so long we are not even willing to think...or worse, not even willing to try.
The brain is constantly on the lookout for ways to improve by obtaining new knowledge and skills, even before birth. Unfortunately, retaining information can be challenging, simply because instructors and course designers do not always use methods that facilitate remembering. The following seven points look at key principles from neuroscience research paired with tips that will allow course creators to achieve effective eLearning development.
On January 19, our nation will have a new holiday to celebrate. Normally, we’d have the Hallmark corporation to thank for this, but this time there is a very different force behind the movement: the American gun lobby.
