This is not the first time that epidemiological models used to understand and predict the spread of diseases have been applied to the spread of ideas--though the 'idea' here is the popularity of a given online social network. Over time, users develop an 'immunity' of sorts--that is to say, they lose interest--and the platform's popularity suffers as a result.

 

Unfortunately, the scientific approach applied to social networks did not explore the biggest question for platform owners and marketing practitioners: how to keep popularity from decaying.
