#NSLI-Y Morocco Summer Newsletter | iEARN in Action | Scoop.it

Dear NSLI-Y Parent:

It seems like just a short time ago that your scholar was here in New York preparing for their journey abroad to Morocco to study the Arabic language. The group has been in country now for three weeks and each student is already excelling in their language learning. We've enjoyed hearing their updates and stories as they adjust to a new culture, family, and language. We hope you enjoy their highlights included in this newsletter.

Sincerely,
NSLI-Y Team

Common Dad!!!

Common Dad!!! | iEARN in Action | Scoop.it

I went to the United States as an exchange student for a whole year. Going to a foreign country in a full scholarship was really exciting not only for me but also for my whole family. I said goodbye to my family with smiling face, and I could see the sadness in the faces of my parents because they wouldn’t be able to see me for a whole year. I was just relaxed and excited to enjoy a full new life so I didn’t give any importance to the goodbye since I was meeting my family after only one year. My dad and I went to the other village to catch the land cruiser. I wish I knew that it was the last walk with my dad forever, not only for a year. My dad said goodbye with proud tears, but I was rushing to experience a year in different way and come back. I wish that I had known that that was the last chance for me to hug my dad, and I wouldn’t be able to see him again. The last words coming from my dad were not that important at that time, but I wish I had saved them somewhere. ...

The need and outcome of Volunteerism. | AurBlog #Pakistan #KLYES | iEARN in Action | Scoop.it

However, volunteerism is not confined to organizations. Many conscientious youths today have taken it in their hands to serve their country. One of such groups comprises of alumni from Kennedy-Lugar Youth Exchange and Study Program (YES), who go on a year scholarship to USA and on their return, involve themselves in myriad of community service projects. In the past, they have worked in the renovation of an orphanage in Lahore named ‘Dar-ul-Tanzeem’, embellishing the living situation of about 70 children. After the flood hit of 2010, they set flood-relief camps, distributing basic necessities to the sufferers. Similarly, these youngsters volunteer at radio-stations, spreading awareness women rights, human trafficking, so on and so forth. Often they fundraise to keep their projects in full swing; however, they also earn grants from the US Department of State, which is very willing to provide financial support for some quality projects.

My Life Changing Year!!! | #KLYES

My Life Changing Year!!! | #KLYES | iEARN in Action | Scoop.it
During my year I was in Speech and Debate team, Student Council, Scouts, Art club, Drama club, and Science and Social Studies Academic Team and in sports I played Basketball and Track. During my exchange year I also did a lot of community service for which I got the Presidential Service Award signed by Mr.
President Obama and I also got an athletic award in Track.

My exchange year gave me a lot of chances to do many things that I had never imagined to do before. I played Basketball, Track, and was in scouts etc. I also had three host brothers for the first time because I never had a brother and now I have friends from like thirty different countries. For promoting my culture I gave a Presentation about Pakistan at my High school and I also used to tell them various things about Pakistan. I also used to wear my traditional clothes at my school and when I go out with friends, they really liked my traditional clothes. I was not a really responsible kid but the responsibilities I was given during my exchange year made me responsible and good time manager.
