The European Union will publish an action plan later this year to rein in illegal and “unregulated” online gambling.


The paper will include measures to clamp down “on the many illegal websites, often hosted in offshore havens,” that offer gambling services, Michel Barnier, the EU internal market chief, said in a speech in Brussels today.

EU Event Discusses Steps Towards Online Gambling Regulation | This Week in Gambling - News | Scoop.it
Wednesday, Jun. 27, saw an event take place at the European Parliament in which the European Commission discussed the future regulation of online gambling.


The European Union (EU) Internal Market Commissioner Michel Barnier spoke publicly on the subject for the first time since late last year, and the European Gaming and Betting Association (EGBA) has today expressed its satisfaction with Barnier’s announcement.


The Commissioner discussed two routes of action the Commission is set to take; it will take steps against Member States whose gambling regulation violates EU law by reactivating pending infringements and complaints, and will propose a number of European policy initiatives in September including the development of “a common European base of principles and measures of protection”.

The European Gaming and Betting Association has published a manifesto for a sustainable EU policy for online gambling.


While the European Gaming and Betting Association has published a manifesto for a sustainable EU policy for online gambling, countries like Belgium and the Netherlands continue to engage in their own policy of quashing foreign competition, including that from neighboring European Union countries.

Secretary general of EGBA Sigrid Ligné said: "Our manifesto is designed to be a timely input to the commission as it prepares its EU action plan for online gambling. We are calling for the introduction of European rules to ensure proper protection for consumers while affording fair and transparent licensing conditions for EU operators."
