Layton Williams in PresbyHonest: Crying My Way through My First Year of Ministry

Layton Williams in PresbyHonest: Crying My Way through My First Year of Ministry | THINKING PRESBYTERIAN | Scoop.it
Crying my way through my first year of ministry
It sounds obvious, but few talk about it without the noble veneer of self-sacrifice: ministry is hard.

by Layton E. Williams

On August 1st, I will celebrate my one-year anniversary of working in ministry. When people ask how my first year went, I tell them, “This is the year I learned to cry in public.” Depending on how honest I’m feeling, sometimes I laugh and turn it into a joke before things get too awkward. Other times I let it stand, because, frankly, it’s the truth.

I have always been an emotional person, but—with few exceptions—I’ve been an adamantly private crier. This year, I have cried a lot. Often in front of people. Often in awkward places.

Stephen Salyards: Musings On How Big Is The PC(USA) Big Tent – Part 2: He's In My Church?

I found it an interesting exercise over the last week or so to see the reaction to a particular political candidate declaring he was a Presbyterian and, with some corroborating evidence, he could specifically be affiliated with the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.). An interesting set of reactions ensued, most seeming to have the implicit or explicit …

Presbyterian Outlook: Theological conversations highlight need for training on cultural diversity, humility | THINKING PRESBYTERIAN | Scoop.it
LOUISVILLE (PNS) Incidents of racially charged violence across the country—from Ferguson to Baltimore, and in many other cities in between—and the public reaction and outcry for justice that followed each have once again brought to light underlying racial tensions that exist in American society. While many victories have been won in terms of legislation over the past several decades, women and men from racial minority communities still face obstacles of prejudice and stereotypes that have yet to

A church for white people?
Your mouth says, “Inclusion!” Your wallet says, “More of the same.”

by Antonio “Tony” Aja

What will the church be like when white people[1] become the minority in the United States? In an ever-increasing multi-cultural and multi-ethnic society—thanks mainly to immigration as well as higher birth rates among people of color—the question has great relevance. It could very well represent the main challenge faced by the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) and other mainline and mostly white denominations in the 21st century.

The religious have gone insane: The separation of church and state — and Scalia from his mind | THINKING PRESBYTERIAN | Scoop.it
The headline on the News Nerd was almost too good to be true: “American Psychological Association to Classify Belief in God As a Mental Illness.”  A study, the story beneath it read, had led the APA to conclude that “a strong and passionate belief in a deity or higher power, to the point where it impairs one’s ability to make conscientious decisions about common sense matters, will now be classified as a mental illness.”  Faith’s recurrent lethality was adduced: “Every year thousands of people die after refusing life-saving treatment on religious grounds.”  Jehovah’s Witnesses, for example, said the article, refuse lifesaving transfusions (on account of biblical prohibitions against the drinking of blood).

Promises to keep: Sheldon Jackson College dissolves, but legacy continues | THINKING PRESBYTERIAN | Scoop.it
by Jerry L. Van Marter In May 2007 Sheldon Jackson College in Sitka, Alaska, conducted its last classes. On June 30, 2015, the storied Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)-related school officially ceased to exist and its board of trustees was dissolved. Few would have guessed that the concluding chapter in the 137-year-old saga of the college (known to most simply as “SJ”) was anything but another sad ending in the annals of Presbyterian history. As an SJ trustee since 2000, I’m here to tell why this n
