Elona Street-Stewart installed as Synod of Lakes and Prairies executive

Elona Street-Stewart installed as Synod of Lakes and Prairies executive | THINKING PRESBYTERIAN | Scoop.it
Following her election last fall, Elona Street-Stewart was installed as the executive of the Synod of Lakes and Prairies on April 26. She becomes the first American Indian to serve in that capacity in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.)

The installation was culturally diverse and unique in many ways–featuring a Native American drum group, a Kenyan choir, a Pendleton blanket and a presentation of traditional gifts.

A ruling elder and a longtime staff member who has served in the synod since 1994, Street-Stewart was elected as synod executive in October and had been serving as executive since Jan. 1. Before taking the position she had been the synod’s associate for racial ethnic ministries and community empowerment.

A senator’s humble faith

A senator’s humble faith | THINKING PRESBYTERIAN | Scoop.it
More than that, Coons told the crowd that he is uneasy with “rigid certainty” on religious questions. He understands that many are skeptical of faith, both because “religion [has] come to be so closely associated with right-wing politics” and because the Bible “has been used as a document, as a foundation, to justify discrimination.” The revered text is, to some, “the basis of intolerance, based on outdated teachings and moral codes and has been a source of pain and distance and discomfort for many.”

If Coons had left it at that, this would have been another in a long series of Washington speeches in which a politician tells his allies how much he agrees with them. But as “a practicing Christian and a devout Presbyterian,” Coons had a second message

Hundreds protest Obama's immigration policy in South Texas

Hundreds protest Obama's immigration policy in South Texas | THINKING PRESBYTERIAN | Scoop.it
Hundreds of people began arriving in Dilley on Saturday to protest the Obama administration's policy of detaining immigrant families.

Buses from throughout Texas gradually delivered protestors to this community 75 miles south of San Antonio, where the American government in recent months opened a large camp to hold immigrant women and their children as they navigate the immigration processing system.

More than 500 protestors were to march from a park in downtown Dilley 2 miles to the Dilley Family Residential Center, a detention center operated for the Homeland Security Department and which can hold up to 2000 people.

Letter to the Episcopal Cafe Editor: the saga at General Seminary

Letter to the Episcopal Cafe Editor: the saga at General Seminary | THINKING PRESBYTERIAN | Scoop.it
I was completely shocked. But the firing was not what shocked me most. What I found more alarming was that there appeared to be no sense of outrage from the larger Episcopal Church. I kept looking for statements from the office at “815”. I watched for articles from Episcopal News Service. An Episcopal institution of the stature and significance of GTS was hurtling into chaos and no one in authority raised an alarm.

We demand justice for others; yet, we sit by and allow them to fire eight tenured faculty members. We expect and call for transparency and accountability, but when the Board of Trustees (BoT) of this institution was questioned by the faculty and subsequently by other groups, as to their practices, the BoT shut down communication and the questions were re-directed to lawyers. We, TEC, pass multiple resolutions about injustice everywhere yet are very slow to live into it within our own church.
Jim Collie's insight:

from the curator:

You may read the entirety of this column by  clicking on the title.  The Rev. M. Sylvia O. Vásquez, Rector St. Paul’s Episcopal Church Walnut Creek, California writes to a popular blog, the Episcopal Cafe, concerning matters at the Episcopal Church's General Theological Seminary in New York City.  Cogently she protests the situation which came about when the Trustees secretly changed the Operating Procedures of the Seminary removing any faculty voice in the academic affairs of the School, and the firing of eight tenured faculty members.

But her major issue is the silence of denominational leaders and their acceptance of wrongs and injustices - without protest.  There are some similarities to recent PMA matters in the PCUSA and the painful silence of our church leaders. While the situation relating to employees is quite different the similarities of corporate behavior, its silence and the failure of accountability are unhappily alike.

Presbyterian World Mission funding gap may force recall of 40 mission co-workers by 2017

Presbyterian World Mission funding gap may force recall of 40 mission co-workers by 2017 | THINKING PRESBYTERIAN | Scoop.it
In the 1970s, when the United Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) was faced with bringing mission personnel home from international service due to funding, the Synod of the Trinity said, “Don’t do that without first letting us know.”

Now, four decades later, 22 former Moderators of the General Assemblies of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) and its predecessor churches have written an open letter asking for fervent prayer and sacrificial giving to meet a funding gap of $925,000 in 2016 that could widen to $4.5 million in 2017, resulting in the recall of approximately 40 of the 162 mission co-workers.

“The messages of support we’ve received from across the church and from our partners around the world have been an inspiration to all of us who are working very hard to meet this challenge,” says Hunter Farrell, director, Presbyterian World Mission.
