Christian exodus from Mosul is a tragedy says World Council of Churches - Ecumenical News | THINKING PRESBYTERIAN | Scoop.it

Iraq's current situation is a "tragedy for many", both Christians and Muslims, and deeply worrying says the World Council of Churches general secretary, Rev. Olav Fyske Tveit.

Presbyterian playwright addresses patriarchy at seminary

Presbyterian playwright addresses patriarchy at seminary | THINKING PRESBYTERIAN | Scoop.it

Holmgren didn’t go to Princeton naïve about the challenges she would face; in fact, she went intending to be an agent of change. That’s what God Girl is about.

The play focuses on the pressure for the seminary to see the damage of patriarchy while telling the stories of women who feel assaulted rather than nourished. Physical attacks, humiliation, sexual harassment and inappropriate use of power are a few of the realities Holmgren and her classmates experienced and which are portrayed in the play.

In the play, professors address students by saying, “Men, open your books … Remember, you are sons of God ... This is a brotherhood of man…” This male-centered language is intentionally used to belittle the female students in the room.

Holmgren and other female students at the time believed themselves to be on the front lines, challenging a system of theological education that saw no need to change and frequently pushed away people who insisted it should.

Spare time to serve

Spare time to serve | THINKING PRESBYTERIAN | Scoop.it

STATESVILLE, N.C.

Coastal communities often attract retired residents or winter visitors with plenty of spare time. Rockport, Texas, is no different. But there, community members are using their time to serve others.

Seven years ago, members at Rockport’s First Presbyterian Church were discussing local hunger issues and decided to offer a free meal every Tuesday night. First’s pastor, the Rev. Charlie Schuler, took the idea to other local pastors to see if their churches would be willing to contribute time and money to the ministry — now, seven churches in Rockport help with the weekly meal.

Many of the 300 people who show up to Community Table every week are homeless or poor, but others are looking for the sense of community the dinners provide.
