The Netherlands' Tallest Church Looks Even More Amazing From a Drone

Aerial drone videos, for better or worse, are here to stay, but it's difficult to be too upset about this filming technique's unchecked adoption when it captures video like this. Dutch filmmakers Jelte Keur and Reinout van Schie filmed the tallest church in the Netherlands, and the results are breathtaking.

The Man Who Humanized War

The Man Who Humanized War | THINKING PRESBYTERIAN | Scoop.it

When Dunant arrived in Solferino, Napoleon’s headquarters, the landscape was littered with dead, dying, and wounded soldiers. Surprised by the scale, the two armies were completely unprepared to bury their dead, comfort the dying, or tend the wounded. Their field hospitals and medical supplies were woefully inadequate. Compassion for wounded enemies was also in short supply: both armies shot or bayoneted them.

PC(USA) Stated Clerk responds to Ferguson grand jury decision

PC(USA) Stated Clerk responds to Ferguson grand jury decision | THINKING PRESBYTERIAN | Scoop.it

Today the community justice system of Ferguson, Missouri, told the parents of Michael Brown that his killing was justified. We grieve with the family and community about the decision, and encourage support for their continued quest for justice.

This decision calls the whole church to reflect seriously about the communities and the racial climate we have created in this country. We need a society where everyone is treated with dignity and valued, where there is no fear of walking down the street. We and the places where we live have fallen short of that.

We call the church to pray that God will give us the courage and strength to have honest conversations about race where we live, work, and worship. We pray for safe spaces in Ferguson and in all communities for people to voice their views. We hope for lessons learned, lives changed, and inequitable systems across the United States dismantled in order to bring about the kind of world God has called us to co-create.

The last healing miracle of Jesus is in Luke 22. It is the story of Jesus’ capture in the Garden of Gethsemane. One of the disciples reacts, and in defense of Jesus slices off the ear of a servant of the high priest. Jesus says “No more of this!” and heals the servant. May “no more of this” and healing be the church’s response. Amen

La Mesa Presbyterian Church is an island of hope in an Albuquerque neighborhood that has more than its share of challenges, starting with poverty. What you noticed right away once you squeezed into the crowded community room, was that there is no line here between the haves and the have-nots. Everybody is together. The racket from shared conversations and laughter is overwhelming.

Spiritual Hiccups: Ferguson, Advent, and God's Dream

Spiritual Hiccups: Ferguson, Advent, and God's Dream | THINKING PRESBYTERIAN | Scoop.it

In the aftermath of last night's rioting in Ferguson, Jeff Krehbiel, a friend and colleague, posted this quote on his Facebook page.

It is not enough for me to stand before you tonight and condemn riots. It would be morally irresponsible for me to do that without, at the same time, condemning the contingent, intolerable conditions that exist in our society. These conditions are the things that cause individuals to feel that they have no other alternative than to engage in violent rebellions to get attention. And I must say tonight that a riot is the language of the unheard. And what is it America has failed to hear? It has failed to hear that the plight of the negro poor has worsened over the last twelve or fifteen years. It has failed to hear that the promises of freedom and justice have not been met. And it has failed to hear that large segments of white society are more concerned about tranquility and the status quo than about justice and humanity.

These words are from Martin Luther King, Jr. Clearly he was not addressing the events in Ferguson, but the words ring true for today's headlines and for today's America, regardless of those who say that racism and the civil rights movement belong to the past.

A call to prayer for the Sudan Presbyterian Evangelical Church from Stated Clerk Gradye Parson and Executive Director Linda Valentine

A call to prayer for the Sudan Presbyterian Evangelical Church from Stated Clerk Gradye Parson and Executive Director Linda Valentine | THINKING PRESBYTERIAN | Scoop.it

We call Presbyterians to stand with our partners in the Sudan Presbyterian Evangelical Church in deep concern and prayer for their people and for their property. Our partners report that the government of Sudan has destroyed the house of the pastor of the Sudan Presbyterian Evangelical Church in Khartoum North. They note that church members thwarted efforts to destroy the pastor’s office.

The church is the people. But such attacks on church property represent an effort to intimidate the community and to suppress religious freedom. Our partners ask us for solidarity and action, including prayer.
