The Presbyterian Church's All-American Divestment from the Israeli Occupation | Boston Review

The Presbyterian Church's All-American Divestment from the Israeli Occupation | Boston Review | THINKING PRESBYTERIAN | Scoop.it

However, in public discourse, the Church's move is blurred: their action against American companies is portrayed as an action against Israel. This serves the interests of two radically different groups. If the Church’s divestment is falsely deemed as “anti-Israel” or “Israel divestment,” both Israel hardliners (who oppose the act), and the international BDS movement (who support the act) can use it as springboard for their own rhetoric.

For Israel hardliners, branding the act as "anti-Israel" serves as a diversion, shifting the topic away from the content of the accusations against the Israeli occupation. While the Church has repeatedly asserted Israel's right to exist, and called on Palestinian leadership to do the same, the act was predictably labeled “anti-Semitic”, and an AJC representative claimed it "empowered those within the denomination who are driven by hatred of Israel.”

Erin Cox-Holmes, executive presbyter at Donegal since 2010, had been praying too — about Central Presbyterian Church in Downingtown, Pennsylvania.  The 900-member congregation was in the midst of a “tangled split.”

After failing to get the required 75 percent super majority vote to leave the denomination, the pastors, most of the church staff and session, and around 250 members had left to form an Evangelical Presbyterian Church congregation down the street.

Betting on the love of Jesus: A pastoral letter from some leaders of the Hispanic and Latino community - The Presbyterian Outlook

By Jose Luis Casal, General Missioner of Tres Rios Presbytery Ninety-two Hispanic and Latino leaders of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) sent a letter to their communities in the United States and sister churches in Latin America about the decisions taken by the 221 General Assembly. The letter addresses the most controversial issues debated by the assembly. “We already have heard many times,” the letter says, “that the General Assembly of the church adopted an authoritative interpretation of its constitution, which leaves it to teaching elders (i.e., clergy) the decision to celebrate marriages between people of the same sex in the …

Investing In Peace: Israel, Palestine and the Presbyterian Church. - The Raven Foundation | THINKING PRESBYTERIAN | Scoop.it

And while I support the PCUSA for giving prophetic critique as a difficult but necessary step toward reconciliation, I also acknowledge the need for American Christians in particular (with our sordid history of imperialism intermingled with Christian triumphalism) to hear the critiques of our Jewish and Palestinian (Muslim and Christian) siblings. May we ever be willing to seek the truth and both speak and hear it in love, that we may rid our hearts and souls of rivalry, bless one another, and be the family we were created to be, reflecting the divine image of our God.

In the wake of the Supreme Court's Hobby Lobby decision (and its granting of injunctive relief to Wheaton College), various faith-based organizations (FBOs) are stepping up to ask to be exempted from President Obama's impending executive order barring federal contractors from discriminating against gays and lesbians. from the curator:   There are almost two years worth of searchable materials on THINKING PRESBYTERIAN. We collect news from and about the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) - and issues it is concerned about. The odd shaped funnel like symbol in the upper right hand of the page opens a search function which will take you pretty quickly to articles collected here about your subject. Drop me a note if you have questions.

In Kenya, a pastor with disabilities breaks barriers for others - Religion News Service | THINKING PRESBYTERIAN | Scoop.it

NAIROBI, Kenya (RNS)

On a Sunday at the Presbyterian church in the Bahati neighborhood, a young woman haltingly approaches the pulpit with a walking cane in one hand and a Bible in the other. Somewhere in her pocket is a mobile phone, which she uses to send out at least 400 Bible quotes a day to Christians across the city.

The Rev. Dawn Gikandi, 31, is a rarity here — a pastor who is a woman, a theologian, a social media devotee and a disabled person in a country that stigmatizes people who are physically impaired.
