Be back online the second week in June -- this Scooper is taking a vacation from the internet.
Occasionally this site will be updated over the next couple of weeks-- but essentially I'm taking a break. Here's some info for you. I generally have about 25 visitors in a day -- sometimes as many as 50 - over the weekend, often its 9 or 10 a day. This is not a problem for me because this is the way I keep myself reading and informed about churchy things. But frankly it is on the low side of any logical target. I invite your comments here - feel free to say what you like to read here, what you don't bother with -- and what you'd really like to have show up on a daily reading list. And, one last thing - if you'd like an email reminder when the morning posting is complete (so you don't have to discipline yourself to look in here) please drop me a note to jimcollie@gmail.com, with THINKING PRESBYTERIAN NOTICE in the subject line. I'll put you on a reminder list. It might be helpful to you.

And I am afraid there are Calvinists, who, while they account it a proof of their humility that they are willing in words to debase the creature, and to all the glory of salvation to the Lord, yet know not what manner of spirit they are of.

BEIT SAHOUR, WEST BANK On Oct. 8, the St. George Romanian Orthodox Church in Jerusalem was targeted in a string of attacks on Christian Holy sites. Assailants threw stones, bottles, and garbage at the door of the church. This is the third such assault to have occurred over the course of one month.

His deep faith and commitment to prayer and worship provides the foundation for his message of love and forgiveness. He has created that message through extensive contemplation of such profound "Big Questions" as "Do we live in a moral universe?" and "What is humanity's duty to reflect and live God's purposes?"

The study “Christian Marriage in the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.),” prepared by the Office of Theology and Worship of the Presbyterian Mission Agency, is a faithful effort to fulfill the General Assembly’s call for “serious study and discernment.” The study, which is available here, is necessarily limited in its focus and draws on a short list of resources for congregational study. For its structure and content, it gives particular emphasis to the marriage liturgy in the Book of Common Worship, which was published in 1993. This document, in contrast to similar books in other traditions, does not have confessional or theological authority. Like a hymnal or seasonal liturgy prepared by denominational staff, its use is voluntary and, while frequently helpful, was never intended as the definitive statement of what Presbyterians believe.

The Texas Conference of the United Methodist Church has proposed changing its minimum standards for clergy to discourage people over 45 from becoming candidates for ordained ministry. The conference’s board of ordained ministry is seeking feedback through September this year and does not plan to make any final decision on its standards until October. But the possible changes have already sparked debate across the United Methodist blogosphere. Some call it an example of blatant age discrimination, while others hail it as a welcome consideration for serving the needs of tomorrow’s church.

Auburn Theological Seminary has a long commitment to bridging religious divides, building community, and pursing justice, which makes its work against gun violence all the more appropriate. Last month Auburn’s President, the Rev. Dr. Katharine Rhodes Henderson, released a statement on the bipartisan U.S. Senate proposal to expand background checks on firearm purchases and to close the “gun show loophole.”
“All over the country, faith leaders picked up their phones to make certain our leaders know the only right and just action is a vote to prevent gun violence,” she said. “Spurred by Auburn’s social action arm, Groundswell, more than 85,000 people of faith and faith leaders are urging their senators to prevent gun violence.
