Open Source Center (OSC) Becomes Open Source Enterprise (OSE)

Open Source Center (OSC) Becomes Open Source Enterprise (OSE) | Thinking Outside Pandora's Box | Scoop.it
The DNI Open Source Center has been redesignated the Open Source Enterprise and incorporated in CIA’s new Directorate of Digital Innovation.

The Open Source Center, established in 2005, was tasked to collect and analyze open source information of intelligence value across all media – – print, broadcast and online. The OSC was the successor to the Foreign Broadcast Information Service (FBIS), which gathered and translated world news coverage and other open source information for half a century.

“As part of the Agency modernization effort announced by Director Brennan earlier this year, the DNI Open Source Center (OSC) changed its name to the Open Source Enterprise (OSE) on October 1, 2015,” said CIA spokesperson Ryan Trapani. “OSE remains dedicated to collecting, analyzing, and disseminating publicly available information of intelligence value. The organization’s new name reflects the broad relevance and scope of the open source mission.”

Human colony on Mars: SpaceX’s backup plan for humanity

Human colony on Mars: SpaceX’s backup plan for humanity | Thinking Outside Pandora's Box | Scoop.it

Space journalist and NASASpaceFlight Managing Director Chris Bergin’s latest tweet on SpaceX’s “most exciting thing ever” has set social media ablaze in anticipation of a big announcement, promised earlier in 2015 by Elon Musk in a Reddit AMA. Now, the SpaceX CEO may be unveiling his plan for the next big step in space travel – a human colony on Mars.

SpaceX’s stellar record in space transport services and aerospace manufacturing may soon get a shot in the arm with an announcement of the Mars Colonial Transporter, or MCT, reports TechTimes. A human settlement on Mars doesn’t seem too far away, with many estimates having put the years between 2025 and 2030 probable for the launch of the first human mission to Mars.

The 2nd US NAP for OpenGov calls for expert networking pilots at the federal agencies. Here is another pilot, the GovLab’s ExpertNet Living Lab, a collaboration with the City of Buenos Aires.  A good starting point is my architecture as the various components are available as open source, including OpenStack and the Open Stack slidedeck for new dev.  Pleio is an open source platform that allows Dutch citizens and government officials to find and engage with the right people to collaborate on a project or problem. You should build your application to be aware of infrastructure issues and to be self-healing. If a cloud server fails, your application can simply spin up a new one to take its place. Think in terms of exponential technology as ideally the platforms would interoperate with each other as well as with commercial social sites.  More here: https://groups.google.com/forum/#!msg/us-open-government/GvIEwDq3zbo/NpL5z34-bM0J

Mars Has Always Been a Cold, Cold Desert | Sci-Tech Universe

Mars Has Always Been a Cold, Cold Desert | Sci-Tech Universe | Thinking Outside Pandora's Box | Scoop.it
It's almost a given now that, 3.9 billion years ago, Mars had lakes of water on its surface. But new study from a Caltech team, published in Nature Communications, appears to point to one thing: Mars never had that much atmosphere, so those lakes were possibly less like a tropical paradise and more like the desert areas of Antarctica.

"I think it explains the picture in our head that maybe Mars was always cold and arid," Bethany Ehlmann, a professor of planetary science at Caltech and coauthor of the study, said. Ehlmann added that the possible situation is that the atmosphere when there was liquid water on the surface was just warm enough and just thick enough to guarantee that the water didn't evaporate away.

Older companies stuck in their ways may be a drag on the economy, but older people are an asset to innovation, says entrepreneur Vivek Wadhwa.

A settlement agreement has been reached. I will leave this up for others who may be dealing with similar incidents. Every incident is a little bit different, but there are certain universals. My settlement is a standard, MSPB pre-hearing settlement with a clean record and no preconditions for rehire by the feds. I signed the agreement on July 2, 2014, exactly 50 years from the signing of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Very cool. I'm going to take a little down time for some R & R, but will be back in the job market soon. Come find me on LinkedIn or Twitter for OpenGov and ExpertNet related roles. The agency 2.0/3.0 plans were just released, so the timing is very good.
