POI: Abby VanMuijen, drawing her way to a better education | Wired to think in pictures... | Scoop.it
Person of Interest: Far from the lecture halls at Berkeley, on a study-abroad trip, Abby VanMuijen had an education epiphany by way of a set of colored pencils. Drawing her notes, instead of writing them, helped her think — and learn — better.
Tom Russell's insight:

A great insight into the value of visual thinking and its practical application no matter where you are in life. A great inspiration.

Seth's Blog: Most presentations aren't bullet proof | Wired to think in pictures... | Scoop.it
Bullets do not save time. Memos save time. Presentations aren't about the most concise exposition of facts, they are about changing minds. Bullets are actually aggressive, they're gotchas lying in wait to be brought up later, either by an observer...
Tom Russell's insight:

Another great insight from Seth. If you follow through to his previous article there are some great tips at the bottom for making your presentations more impactful. On the other hand, how about using a graphic instead of a presentation to really make your point ultra-compelling? We work with clients who prefer a large hand-drawn image to get their point across, whether its for a presentation, pitch, or employee communication exercise. Just picture it for a while.

Graphic recording from @UMUC Future of Higher Ed Orkand Lecture/Dialogue tonight. Good stuff! http://t.co/kvherq2UzT
Tom Russell's insight:

Here's an attractive graphic recording of a session within the higher education sector. Looks like it was a wordy session, but we like the way the recorder has used the colour clouds to accentuate the written message and differentiate them from each other.

Gnip data scientist Brian Lehman walks through how he created a data visualization of languages on Twitter.
Tom Russell's insight:

This is a nicely presented piece about using visual data to analyse the languages used on Twitter. The cleanliness of the visuals, especially the multicoloured chart, are pleasing, and it's also interesting to see the languages that are growing, and strangely declining, on Twitter.

Iconography could involve more than just the dragon: Like the U.K.'s other three countries, Wales has a patron saint, Saint David, and a black-and-gold flag to represent him.
Tom Russell's insight:

Cool read for a Friday, especially of you are interested in our flags, and what might happen if Scotland became independent. From a visual perspective its refreshing to see different ideas applied to something so entrenched in our society.

Tom Russell's insight:

A fascinating article about the role of social media and visual literacy. The proliferation of social media, including Instagram and Twitter, really does encourage a deeper level of visual thinking. For someone who has not grown up with social media I am finding that a restricted character count, plus the possibility of combining this with thought provoking images, is a real educational challenge, and an enjoyable one too. Long may it continue, and lets not demonise it.
